Confessions from a Lover of Fast Cars

A fast look as life in the fast lane.

I confess…..I enjoy fast cars. The best feeling ever is seeing an open road, a blue sky, and feeling the rumble a powerful engine beneath you. I think the worst torture ever is being behind a very slow person that you can’t get around. In those cases I really have to struggle to remind myself of the common thread of humanity I share with the person in front of me. It’s a test of patience.

I was pulled over on the highway in my husband’s Grand Prix about six months ago. I knew I deserved it. I haven’t been pulled over in a few years and I knew I likely was going a tad faster than I should have so I wasn’t going to make a fuss.   The trooper asked for my license and registration. I told him the car was my husband’s. He took one look at each and asked why my address was different than the address the car was registered to. I told him the truth. My husband and I had gotten married two years ago. Between us we had eight children. The plan was to sell his house and move into mine. He got his house all fixed up and put it on the market. Nine months later only one person had even come to see it. Needless to say we gave up. I looked the trooper right in the eye and said, “We’re stuck.” He let me go without the ticket I had deserved.

I tell this story because some people, who either fear me or don’t like me, have tried to make it sound as if I don’t “live” in Attleboro. But I have been right up front about this situation for some time. Many people have experienced the difficulty of this real estate market. We are some of them.

Funny thing is that as time has gone by I have come to appreciate having “my” own house. As I have explained the situation to people many of them have commented, “ Now that’s a real marriage saver isn’t it?”  I laugh because, yes, it can be. At my house I have the final say over every detail. I can be as neat or as messy as I want to be–I really like that. I never thought I could love a man who was neater than I was because …I’m not really sure why. But, I had the notion that a woman MUST be neater than a man to have a balanced relationship! My husband, I confess, is neater than I am sometimes. So having two houses, when the second one is NOT down on the Cape, can be good. We call it our "beachfront property" in the deep forest of Rhode Island. But, unless a person is willing to lose a large chunk of change, the best solution is to try to wait out this awful market.

Speaking of markets,  I have heard that the City of Attleboro is accepting sealed The minimum bid is $250,000.00.  Anyone who is interested is strongly encouraged to contact the mayor’s office.
