Speedway Flea Market Has Everything Under the Sun

Merchants gather at the flea market held each Sunday on the grounds of the Seekonk Speedway.

A vendor attempting to sell his statue of a cat to a young woman could be heard across the field.  “Ten dollars! C’mon! That kitty could be yours! Six, five, four, three, two …!”

Many vendors have gathered at the speedway each Sunday since its opening on May 1 to sell their goods. Merchandise at the Seekonk Speedway Flea Market ranges from old family items like cat statues and tricycles, to resold commercial products like sportswear and watches.

The flea market is still being held on the field beside the speedway every Sunday from 6 am to 2 pm. Parking is free to the public, but the cost to sell on the grounds is $25.

For the merchants, these Sundays require a surprising amount of time and effort.  One woman, Debby, described the mayhem of setting up shop. She said she has to arrive around 1 am to get her spot in line. “Some came at 10 last night, but I think that’s too early,” she said.

With their vans full of goods, the vendors set up their places on the yard before day-break. They put out folding tables, some even prop up tents, and they sit beside their business and wait. By the end of their day at 2 pm, the merchants, exhausted, pack up their tables and remaining merchandise; many will return the following Sunday.

Vendors vary from first-timers selling their old belongings, to flea market veterans.  Debby has been coming to the Seekonk Speedway Flea for five years now, every Sunday, weather permitting.

The Seekonk Speedway Flea Market take place every Sunday at 1710 Fall River Ave.
