"Ice Cream Ride" a Growing Hit with Motorcyclists

Weekly ride leaves from Smart Moto at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Iconic 60’s rock band Steppenwolf said it best: “Get your motors runnin.’ Head out on the highway. Looking for ice cream or whatever comes our way.” Well, it was something like that, wasn’t it? Either way, it seems inevitably that two of the most popular summer activities - motorcycle riding and eating ice cream - would one day be joined together.

Thanks to Jason Beaver, of , local motorcyclists can participate in weekly “Ice Cream Rides.” Using his new business as a launching pad, Beaver has, for the past three weeks, organized his fellow riders on mini excursions to homemade ice cream stands around the region.

The newly formed group meets on Wednesday evenings around 6:45 p.m. at Smart Moto. All riders are welcome to join in. The riders leave the site at 7 p.m. sharp and travel to a spot between 30 minutes to a half hour away.

Beaver says they’ll ride rain or shine if people show up. The first week of the ride was a wet one, drawing only one other rider. Nonetheless, they drove off to Tiverton, home of Gray’s ice cream. The second week a couple more riders showed up to head to Buttonwood Farm in Griswold, Connecticut. And, last week, a few more riders took a trip to Peaceful Meadows in Middleboro, a spot that, so far, is Beaver’s favorite.

“I liked the ambience better at Buttonwoods Farm, but the Dutch Chocolate Almond at Peaceful Meadows was my favorite,” said Beaver.

The Ice Cream Ride, he says, is less about the perfect ride and more about a social connection with other riders.

“It’s fun to get together with like minded people. Last week we all hung out at the ice cream stand for an hour just talking about riding experiences,” says Beaver.

Beaver also admits it’s a great way to get people to his business. He’s planning rides through the end of the summer and into the Fall, as long as weather permits.

This week’s ride will bring riders to the Ice Cream Factory in Cumberland, Rhode Island. For more information, visit Smart Moto’s website here.
