Dick's Removes Sporting Rifles From Stores

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut last week, the sporting goods chain has decided to remove guns from stores.

Dick’s Sporting Goods has removed all “modern sporting rifles” from their stores nationwide as well as all guns from sale and display in its store nearest to Newtown, Conn., in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings last week.

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community,” according to a company press release.

“Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

“We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.

Dick’s Sporting Goods has more than 500 stores in 44 states, including one in Seekonk.

I think it's a noble gesture on the part of Dick's, and yes, I would like to see all Sporting Goods stores remove all manner of guns from their shelves... forever. I have never understood the pleasure some people get from stalking and killing animals. That being said, I believe the 2nd Amendment should be upheld and that we need no further laws banning weapons.

I remember working for Walmart when we had certain guns (since removed awhile ago). We had a huge system in place. There had to be a salaried mgr there who knew the procedure of filling out the Federal forms. I don't know about the background checks since MA doesn't require them to check. I agree that all simple sporting goods stores shouldn't sell them. You have people who are working behind the counter who have the keys to ammunition and maybe a different mgr with keys to the actual weapon. I can't tell you how many times I saw the associate leave the keys on the counter of the ammunition case. I would take the keys and when he would come by and said he lost them, alls we could do is write them up. If people want to get a gun, they should go through their town police office and deal with it there. I'm not trying to get into the politics of it. I just simply want it better controlled.

Thank you, Dick's. I hope this decision is rewarded by people going out of their way to patronize your stores.

@David, MA has some of the stricted rules in any state, and background checks are required to be done on any and all individuals purchasing a weapon of any kind. If you say MA does not require it, you and you store manager need to be retrained, and hopefully your store did not allow any weapon sold without proper checks.....

Why? It is simply a public relations decision and temporary. When things settle down, they will all be back to business as usual.

deb of see-attleboro: Walmart didn't go back. Do you have information that the rest of us don't?

Are you giving a shout out to Walmart? I can think of plenty of other reasons to NOT shop at Walmart.

I don't shop at Walmart. I was just saying that they didn't go back to carrying guns. You say Dick's will.

Even If they don't go back there are around 30 individual gun shops in Mass alone. Won't make much difference for the people who wanted to get ripped off at Dick's anyways.

First thing is I feel for all those affected in this recent tragedy. I cant imagine what those parents are going through, My heart goes out to all of them. BUT, just because this maniac used an “assault rifle” doesn't mean everyone who responsibly owns these types of rifles should be punished by ridiculous law makers who are grasping at straws. They are trying to push these ridiculous weapon bans thru so quickly right now without truly analyzing them. I don't understand What Dicks Sporting Goods is trying to prove. Hunting is a way of life, weather the animal is trapped, shot with a Bow or Rifle. Dicks maybe should just be another camping/sports store if they are going to do away with Hunting goods. Another note on this so called ban, Remember the Oklahoma Bombing April 19, 1995 that Killed 168 People, 19 of those kids under the age of 6!!! That was done with Fertilizer and Diesel Fuel. I guess we need to ban those items too. Oh wait that goes back to the the true saying of “People kill People” NOT Guns nor Fertilizer or Diesel Fuel...PEOPLE!!! its a horrible tragedy but there must be a better solution with todays society and economy. I Recommend Every School have a Secure Lobby prior to gaining access to the classroom halls.
