Attleboro Business Q&A: Briggs Corner Store

Patch recently caught up with Briggs Corner Store owner Shawn Martin.

Briggs Corner Store has been a staple in the southeast corner of Attleboro since it was first established in 1926.

While the wine and groceries at Briggs may be a known commodity in the city, many may not know about every service the store offers, said Shawn Martin, who has owned the store for the past seven years.

Patch recently caught up with Martin to ask him about the Attleboro store that has been central in the neighborhood for nearly nine decades.

Patch: What made you want to purchase Briggs Corner Store seven years ago?

Martin: I had been looking at businesses and was tired of working for somebody else. This opportunity came up and it worked itself out.

Patch: What is one thing Attleboro residents may not know about your business?

Martin: If you’re not local to here, you might not know everything we have and everything that we do.  There’s notary services, mailboxes for rental, a shipping part of the business. There’s a lot you can get here.

Patch: How was your business affected by the down economy?

Martin: You know, it has been affected. In the liquor and the lottery business, in good times and bad times people still buy. But, a lot of times they trade down. Fuel prices have a huge effect on this business and with discretionary income, if you’re spending an extra $10-$15 to fill up your tank that week, it’s got to come from somewhere.

The grocery business has taken a pretty big hit because, with the fuel prices and the economy, everyone now, when they go into the supermarket, they’re writing their lists.

But, the liquor side of the business, and the lottery side of the business is pretty stable.

Patch: What do you like about owning a business in Attleboro?

Martin: I love the neighborhood. I love where we are. The customers, the people that work here… I enjoy coming to work and talking to people.

Patch: For you personally, what is the best part of your job?

Martin: Obviously, it’s the people.

Having your own is always nice and you think you make all the decisions but you don’t. You listen. Especially the people who work here – they get a lot of input in how we do things and what we do because they’re here more than I am when you put it all together, so I try to take their input and advice and some of them have been working here for 20 years. I can learn from them to drive business.
