Wamsutta Middle School was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a man was seen walking behind the school who, according to one student, appeared to have a firearm in his back pocket, Attleboro Police said.
The lockdown has since ended and students have been released from school under heavy police presence. Nobody was found after police searched the area. The search included a flyover from the Massachusetts State Police air wing.
Police Det. Sgt. Arthur Brillon said police responded after receiving a call that at least four students, who were outside in the afternoon, had seen a man emerge from the woods. The man allegedly turned and walked back into the woods.
Brillon said one of the students alleged the man had a firearm in his back pocket, prompting a serious investigation by Attleboro Police, Rehoboth Police and the Massachusetts State Police.
Brillon said nobody was found in the search and area police retained a perimeter for the remainder of the day, and maintained a "presence" as students exited school.
Pawtucket Police also assisted Attleboro PD while the search was conducted, Brillon said.
