Attleboro Arts Museum Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Members come together to share and reflect on museum's history.

The Attleboro Arts Museum opened to a packed house Wednesday to celebrate its 90th anniversary in the city.

Mim Fawcett, the museum's executive director, spoke to a crowd of trustees, artists and residents as she reflected on the history of the museum and what it brings to the city.

"We have many folks we're honoring and many reflections on the past year," she said. "It's pretty remarkable. I have to say we're having several celebrations this year. They seem to be happening every day."

To help celebrate the anniversary, Fawcett said the museum is taking a note from the Boston Red Sox and sponsoring 90 Acts of Artful Kindness, which she defined as a thoughtful deed of creative charity the museum receives or shares.

"It's so that we can share the very powerful exchange of art," she said.

She said the museum has already exchanged 74 creative good deeds. An example is member Kerry St. Pierre conducting a class for chalk drawing for middle school students at the Attleboro Public Library.

"We're pleased to be able to celebrate the museum's anniversary in this way," she said. "It turns into a party every time we exchange something wonderful. We want to convey our sincere thanks to all that have participated in the program so far."

Mims also recognized last year's death of Josephine Nuyzio, who was one of the museum's most active members.

"I was truly sad to hear of her passing," Mim said.

Mim added she that member Paula DeSimone put Nuyzio's contribution to the museum best.

She said, "Jo's continued dedication and countless hours of service helped share the emerging role of the museum as a vital partner to greater Attleboro community."
