School on Wheels of Massachusetts seeks volunteer tutors for children impacted by homelessness

School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) is seeking one-on-one afterschool tutors to work with children in grades K-12 in New Bedford and other communities starting in February 2014. As the only organization in Massachusetts providing customized academic support and high quality educational services to children and teens impacted by homelessness in Brockton, New Bedford, Norwell and Stoughton, SOWMA has provided more than 24,000 tutoring hours to 1,600 students since 2004.
Each SOWMA tutor is matched with a student for one or two hours a week. Tutors work with students on homework and school projects. Tutoring sessions are designed to fill in the layers of learning that may be missing due to frequent moves and school absences. Every SOWMA tutor is expected to serve as a mentor and positive role model. Teens and adults aged 18 and older are needed. No previous experience is required.
Every volunteer tutor must attend an instructional Orientation Session and Resource Workshop before beginning to work with a SOWMA student. The next Orientation Session will be held on Saturday, February 8, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and the next Resource Workshop will follow from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm that day. The sessions will be held at HarbOur House, 713 Shawmut Avenue, New Bedford. To register for SOWMA’s upcoming Orientation Session and Resource Workshop in New Bedford or for more information about becoming a volunteer tutor for SOWMA, visit www.sowma.org or contact Operations Director Robin Gilbert at robin@sowma.org, or phone 508-587-9091.
