The girls’ volleyball team of Grace Baptist Christian Academy of Attleboro needed just 75 minutes Saturday to clinch its third successive Massachusetts Association of Christian Schools State Tournament championship by defeating host Twin City Christian School, 3-0, in Lunenburg.
The Centurions bested the Eagles by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-20.
In all three games Saturday, GBCA pulled away late to win solid all-around play of tournament Most Valuable Player Olivia Beals; the adept setting of Emma Goyette and Chelsea Oliveira; the sturdy net play of Kelly Nichols and Christine Sojka; and the strong defensive performances of Jessica Rodrigues and Carrie Kirby.
Nichols and Beals also contributed key five-point serving sprees late in the second and third game, respectively, to seal the final outcomes.
Other team members include Mary Jane Childs, Hannah Perkins, Alison Macbeth, Jessie Stewart, Faith Winchell, Ashley Moraes, Rachel Nichols, Emmalie Yoakum, Head Coach Billi Jo Nichols and Assistant Coach Donna Emerson.
At the conclusion of Saturday’s contest, co-captains Rodrigues and Kirby were presented the MACS regular-season and State Tournament championship trophies and Beals was offered the MVP award. Beals and Kelly Nichols were also named 1st-Team MACS all-stars for the 2013 season, while Rodrigues and Kirby were extended 2nd-team honors.
The Centurions will bring a 9-3 season record into next weekend’s Region Tournament sponsored by the New England Association of Christian Schools in Newington, Conn. GBCA will open tourney play Friday at 5 against the winner of Tuesday’s qualifying contest between Twin City and a Connecticut squad.
