Celebrate Seekonk’s Bicentennial with a Townwide Community Read

Continue the celebration of Seekonk’s 200^th anniversary by participating in our community read and events!  The library will be hosting five weeks of programs related to the selected book title with book discussions, film showings, food events, town history and more! The featured title for the community read is Richard Russo’s Empire Falls. This 2001 Pulitzer award winning novel epitomizes the New England experience of small town life.  Seekonk residents will relate to the main characters as they try to raise their families in a climate of financial duress, all while remembering the town landmarks that “used to be there”.  Staff Librarian Melissa Chiavaroli shares, “As a lifelong New Englander, this novel spoke to me in ways that no other novel has.  It is easy to find a great novel of the south or a depiction of New Englanders as puritan caricatures.  Empire Falls really speaks to you deep in the heart about what it means to live here and what we value.” This is an especially perfect novel as we celebrate our 200^th Anniversary because it is set in modern Empire Falls while giving the history of how the small mill town began 200 years prior.  Seekonk has a rich history of its own and many town residents are interested in how Seekonk became the Seekonk we know today.  “This program will really give us the opportunity to open up the discussion about our town’s history and what resources the library has for residents who want to learn more about the town or their own family history,” Chiavaroli adds.  Our series of community read programs begins with a kickoff all day at the library Wednesday, October 3^rd.  Come in to pick up your copy of the book, movie, or audiobook to be a part of the conversation all month long and receive one of our special giveaways.
