Achieve the American Dream

Our nation has arrived at the fork in the road and we have lost our way toward the American Dream. The November 2012 election is coming very soon and we as a country have serious choices to consider: 1) Continue on our current path of high unemployment, massively high debt and out of control spending or 2) Change course to a different direction with positive results.

The economy is in a total chaotic mess because of the liberal socialist policies of the Democrats and they still don't get it!!! Raising taxes and out of control spending in a bad economy is a horrible idea that will ruin the economy!!! The best example is Obamacare, which is the largest TAX INCREASE on the middle class; this bad legislation will further ruin the chances for job creation.

Currently, the national unemployment rate is at 7.8 percent and about 8.1 percent here in Massachusetts. The administrations of President Obama and Gov. Patrick have continued to tell the voters that the economy is improving. However, this is a fallacy because even though the unemployment rate may have fallen, the numbers that you don't see—the U6 unemployment numbers—tell a vastly different story. The reality is the true unemployment rate is closer to 16 percent and the reason for this atrocious rate is that people have given up looking for work because of the lack of good-paying private sector jobs.

According to the supply side economics theory, tax increases prevent people from keeping more of what they earn and prevents a person from spending on goods and services, which in turn reduces revenue for the producers of those goods. Guess what happens next ... those producers are forced to cut jobs and force people out of work and as a result, the tax base is reduced, which means less revenue for cities, towns, state and our U.S. Government.

Taxing business is not the answer; neither is taxing the rich, middle class and working poor. The answer is not overregulation that hurts job creation or over-spending. The solution is to reduce taxes for individual taxpayers across the board, reduce corporate taxes and reduce job-killing regulations that are hurting the chances for businesses to provide real private sector job growth and good paying jobs or careers. The other part of the solution is to control government spending.

What actions can you take to achieve the American Dream? Elect people who understand how our economy works and understand how to achieve the American Dream of low unemployment, low debt and more money in your pockets.

The American Dream starts by electing people who are fiscally responsible, such as Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for president and vice president, Scott Brown for U.S. Senate and Sean Bielat for Congress. And it continues by electing people such as Richard Ross and Jeff Bailey for state Senate as well as George Ross, Betty Poirier, Jay Barrows, Steve Howitt, Daniel Winslow, Kieko Orrall and Shaunna O'Connell for state representative.

Please join me in going to the polls and voting for fiscally responsible people. The road back to the American Dream starts on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012.

The economy *strengthens* when taxes are raised. It may not be "common sense," but it's true.

Also, federal spending is relatively low now, as a percentage of GDP. It went up under Bush. Why? because Republicans lie to people and get elected claiming to want to lower spending. They don't want to lower spending. They want to shovel federal money into the pockets *they* want, not back into the economy to help the middle class.

Wendy,
You are being seriouusly misled by the Obama administration, the liberal left socialists, and the liberal media hacks. Think of it another way. If taxes are lowered accross the board and that includes the rich, middle class, and poor, or even extending the Bush tax cuts to include the middle class and working poor, more people would be paying taxes and would be added to the tax base. As a result, more money would be in your pocket, and the government (local, state, and U.S) revenues would increase. Government spending has been an issue under Obama, this administration has continued to give free handouts to the illegals and the free loaders in addition to throwing money at the banks and the car companies who didn't need it. It is the Democrats and their lies as well as their spread the wealth around philosophy that has got us into this mess, not the Republicans, nor the Bush administration.

What unmitigated hooey!

Did the strong economic recovery in the mid-to-late 1980s happen because taxes were RAISED?? Nope---just the opposite.

BTW, the corporate tax rate in nearby Canada, which has plenty of social programs / 'benefits', is . . . only 15%. In the U S of A, it's about double that.
The rate here is even higher than socialist Europe.

Sorry, Wendy: truth is the most powerful thing on earth.

Pretty Please??....Can we go back to the booming days of the early 2000s??....I miss the good old days of Cold Warriors running our defense policy. I miss neoconservative whack jobs running World Bank, being ambassador to the U.N., and being U.S. ambassador to countries we war with.
Bring all the PNAC goons back so we can have a reunion. I'd love to have 3.8 percent of our GDP go toward Defense spending. I miss having our economy doing so well with the policy drafted by the 109th congress. I miss the wonderful atmosphere of our domestic politics back then. And our industrial policy during that time? Oh, how I pine for the Bush/Cheney days! Go Romney!! I can't wait to go live under the Olive street bridge! I got dibs first!!

Don't worry, we'll all have Romnesia and we'll forget about those days when we had healthcare and food and a home. We'll be at war in Syria and Iran and our military budget will balloon. Meanwhile our veterans will be under the Olive St. Bridge with us cause the Republicans are already voting against care for our veterans.

With another 4 years of President Obama, you will be living under the Olive Street bridge. When Mitt Romney is elected, you will have the chance of the American dream of a good paying job so you can put food on your table and provide for your family on your own without interference and a free handout from the Government.

You sir are absolutely correct about another 4 years of Obama. I totally agree. I was completely against the Dummycrats ram rodding Gotcha politics based legislation through the House and Senate during their short stay in the majority of both. They had their chance to reverse some damage, Bush Tax cuts, lower defense spending to 2000 /2001 levels. Slam the doors on our economic flight, end both wars, prohibit war profitiering. Nope! God forbid the dummycrats had a pragmatic bone in their body, they went straight for the counter punch. Obamacare. As for the American dreams, well, thanks to dummycrats dropping the ball when they had a chance to reverse course, The American dream is either dead and buried, or there is a tag on the American Dream that reads," MADE IN CHINA". So with that I do agree. That's why Obummer does not get my vote. As for Romney: He would never get my vote for anything. I am one of those few weirdos who do not subscribe to any brand of party. Maybe, (as I have said about the Brown/ Warren race) I would vote only for the candidate who backs out of the race first.

Gretchen,
That's not entirely true. U.S. Senator Scott Brown, a Republican voted with Democrats in favor of the veterans jobs bill back in September; however, the veterand jobs bill was deemed as too costly by the Republican leadership, which I can see their point. The veterans jobs bill needs to be re-worked in order to bring the costs down. The Democrats love high costs and high taxes. As President Ronald Reagan once said: Republicans believe everyday is the Fourth of July and the Democrats believe that everyday is April 15th.

Richard, you simply cannot say things that are untrue.
"The democrats love high coasts and high taxes."
That's not fact that's your biased opinion. You don't even
need to think....just spout this tripe.

Ronald Reagan used the 'tax and spend' label and rode
it into the White House. His factoids weren't any truer than yours.
Now we have reliable fact checkers. For once, think before your write
this propaganda. Say something true for once.

Every government going back in history has somehow neglected
to take care of its veterans. They have paid lip service with
speeches and parades singing the praises of veterans and
speaking of the nation's gratitude.

This generation of soldiers, families, communities, voters are NOT
going to let Republicans conveniently 'forget' what we owe our vets.
It's going to be expensive to care for wounded warriors who come
back from the dead with traumatic brain injuries and PTSD. That's not
'tax and spend'--that's holding true to our promise. If the Republican party
tries to weasel out, they will be hugely unpopular.

It is true that Democrats love high taxes and high costs, just look at Obamacare which is the highest tax increase on the middle class. Also, if the Democrats didn't love high taxes, they wouldn't be crying and whining about increasing taxes for those dreaded 1 percenters who are the job creators.

Actually Paul Heroux has a far better chance of eliminating wasteful spending than Ross since he uses evidence-based methods of judging the spending? Does it work? is it effective? Are there ways of doing more with less?

Ok, Hold up a sec! (sore spot) I take nothing from Mr. Ross other than he wants to duke it out with those mental midgets up on Beacon Hill. I get that.
He seems to want to fight for the district. Ross works hard. Gets hit, sucks it up, and drives on. (All I see)
So, I appreciate his service to our district. (For what little I know of his record.)
My dilemma between Bowles and Ross rested on the fact that Bill was accessible. He was open to my questions. Mr. Ross? Never even saw him. Based on my lack of understanding of how Ross operates, I am left with my gut telling me:
"Can't have a state Rep to lock horns up there on beacon hill. Those guys up there are locked in like Legos and act like hyenas! They turn the other way when confronted, only to regroup and retaliate when they hatch a plan to do so, and generally, much to the disregard of others, when carried out. (They have no fortitude to endure any kind of conflict, because they built a pretty little world up there where "NO" is never told to them.) So bully tactics fail." That's my read.

IDDC, Macro-economics, Justice and corrections system. The case built in his favor. Now when I met Paul Heroux, I was immediately impressed by his personality. I had a short visit during the primaries, He: holding a Heroux sign out by the Elks with a number of his supporters. There was not much political we spoke of, I didn't really feel the need to. I felt pretty comfortable with his direction. I saw a thinker. I saw a feeler. I saw someone who (unlike the '100percent Lib voter', (my sore spot) described by Mr. Lunt.) will utilize his well of knowledge, fed by his many scholarary, professional and personal experiences, coupled by his innately intuitive, "..next step ahead of you.." way of thinking, to out-match the wits of those who may impede his progress to serve his constituents. (Which I believe IS NOT campaign blather from Paul Heroux, but something I feel he deeply cares a lot about, and will do.) As for Mr Ross? Maybe he should open up a bit. Shed some light for others to base their vote. That is my only complaint of Ross.

@JustSaying - How dare you say I am on the criminals side?! I have dedicated my career to decreasing crime, protecting kids, and promoting evidence-based crime policies.

If you are going to intentionally twist what I have said on this issue, put your name beside your thoughts. I challenged Rep Ross to a debate on crime policy. He declined. Now, I challenge YOU to a public debate on decreasing crime.

The City Council did NO research on that issue. Bill Bergevine told me so himself when we met at Morin's Diner. Council did not know how many level 2 and 3 sex offenders we have in Attleboro; they did not contact the Sex Offender Registry Board; the MA Treatment Center for Sex Offender; they didn't even know the rate of recidivism for sex offenders. They knew NOTHING and I find that VERY disturbing.

Go to DoubleACS on Union Street and request a video copy of the 4 Oct 2011 meeting. I clearly said, I was not in favor or against that feel good ordinance that the council passed. I said it was useless and what should be done is that parents are the first and best line of defense against these predators.

If you say you have read what I have written on this issue, then you would have seen this article title "Protecting Children From Sex Offenders: Parents Take Action". I promote strategies presented by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. I don't make this stuff up. I use facts.

If Paul were to be elected, he'd be a freshman Democrat and the leadership on Beacon Hill which is controlled by the liberal lefties would control how he votes on the issues and besides, he would be unpopular with the Democrat leadership such as the House Speaker and House Majority leader who delegate key committee assignments to State Representatives, if Paul Heroux were to vote against his party on the issues. That's another reason why he shouldn't be elected because the Democrats control everything on Beacon Hill. The corrupt untrustworthy culture on Beacon Hill needs to change and that change starts by re-electing George Ross as our State Representative.

Richard, you are in way over your head when discussing crime policy with me. First, please list for everyone your qualifications on this issue as I have listed mine above. If you don't have any you should probably listen to the experts on the matter.

Second, there was NO policy design in that ordinance. It is useless. FACT: child sex offenders are criminals that develop a relationship with a child over the course of time and then exploit that relationship in private, not in a moments notice at the playground. Additionally, you are right that they are sick individuals, but the fact is that there is no cure/deterrence for pedophiles. This ordinance won't deter them - they victimize in private exploiting the trust of children & families. Please read for once what I have read on this issue instead of making things up to make me look bad. You do more harm than good by not listening to an expert on this issue of crime policy.

Richard, I would never be so arrogant to tell you the ins and outs of what you do for a living. Evidence-based crime policy is what I do. I find it very arrogant that you would outright dismiss someone who had more experience on fighting this issue than than the entire City Council members combined.

Now, I don't remember seeing you at that Council hearing. Should I conclude that you don't care about this issue, that it didn't pique your interest? No. I would not say that about you because I am not immature like that.

Paul,
This is an honest question that needed to be addressed which you have answered based on your own experiences; however, to dismiss the hard work of the members of the City Council who came up with the best solution regarding this issue isn't quite fair. The members of the council did their own in-depth research and didn't take this issue lightly. I watch the council meetings every Tuesday night live on DoubleACS from the comfort of my own home and I do remember watching and listening to your comments and everyone else's comments that night. With that being said, there are some perpertrators who have committed these acts in public such as at a Library, and I do remember reading a newspaper story several years ago of an incident at Emerald Square Mall so it is not out of the ordinary. I do commend your anti-crime efforts though.

Richard, I just had a big response to what you said, but I will just respond with the fact that the Council did no research. I know this because more than one Counselor told me this. I have said Bill Bergevine and I met at Morin's to talk about this issue and he confirmed this for me. I said this in Oct 2011 and I am saying it again. Council didn't do any research on the matter and I slammed them this evening for taking this issue so lightly. C. Felos was asking me basic questions about the rate of recidivism and how many sex offenders are in Attleboro. They did not know anything.

Rather then me defending what I have said, how about they show us the reports they used, the meetings they held and the facts the considered when addressing this issue? I've said more than enough about this issue.

There are SO many people in this area who are child sexual abuse survivors that it was a volatile issue for the City Council to have tackled. (I know from my work and from personal experience what a hot button this is). May I suggest that we not get into a long wrangle over this.

Ms. Felos is a fine person. She spoke extensively with my husband, Rev. Bill Robinson when she ran for City Council at Large. She earned my respect for the quality of her listening and her willingness to take time with us to explore issues we disagree on. Ms. Felos may have done her homework but I'm not sure 1) how much investigation the other City members did, and 2) how much they were willing to be 'educated' by her.

I think it best, at this point, for all sides to pick a time to discuss this after the election and I would ask you to address other issues that came out of the debate, lest you stir up a controversy that affects voting patterns for Mr. Ross and Mr. Heroux. You do a disservice to sexual abuse survivors and the candidates if you pursue this here.

If you remember, as part of a discussion I had with you on PATCH, I suggested that you and I both go to the Darkness to Light training that was part of the Attleboro Public Library's Big Read program. Did you happen to go to that?? Such a forum is the place for discussion sexual abuse. Also, Ms. Felos might not like her name and reputation bandied about here. Take care how you proceed.

Richard: You can see now in the wake of Hurricane Sandy that there are additional serious issues we must contend with that, if unaddressed, will ruin the economy: large sections of the country are extremely vulnerable to the ravages of ever more destructive storms and we have an out-dated, crumbling infrastructure in much of the nation. How will we approach these problems if government is not involved? The elephant is like a worm to the boy who thinks only of worms: it has a long, worm-like trunk. But that's not the whole story. We need elected officials who can look at the complexity of issues and how they intersect and come up with sensible strategies that may not seem logical when we look only at a piece of the puzzle. If we can save New York City from future devastation by erecting sea barriers that cost $5 to $10 billion, that investment may save tens to hundreds of billions of dollars over the next few decades. Sometimes we have to spend money to save money, even if that seems contradictory.

If our Government spends wisely and not out of control this is an issue that should be addressed although a super storm like Hurricane Sandy comes once every 50 years, I don't see the purpose of spending 10 billion, the spending should come from the individual states, not the Federal Government. If President Obama is re-elected, Government will be too big and taxes will increase accross the board which hurts the economy. We also need a stronger military to thwart terrorism. The Obama administration has also bowed down to China, and we borrowed more than we should have from China which is wrong. Here's another fact, China is manipulating their currency which has meant more U.S jobs being sent to China instead of keeping the jobs here in America and the Obama administration has done nothing to combat the Chinese Government and hold their feet to the fire on this which is a huge mistake. I don't think President Obama deserves re-election, that's not the hope and change that I'm looking for.

Please get more informed. Hurricane Sandy was "unprecedented" according to the Weather Channel, CNN, and NECN. Not a 50 years storm, an unprecedented storm. It's the result of climate change, something Bush and the Right denied for 6 years. Many Republicans are still in denial.

Don't tell me you are still insisting, along with Romney, that the states need to handle the repairs of Sandy. Romney wants to "privatize" FEMA. What a dumb thing to say. People are really suffering and you ignore all that Federal government is doing: coordinating, leading, for Ex. helping out like sending 3 aircraft carriers so that rescue helicopters could have a place to land when the airports were flooded. Egad what a heartless statement.

Obama has been in for 4 years. He hasn't raised taxes or destroyed the economy. He needs 8 years to undo the disaster Bush II brought about. China, I'm not defending but Obama has gotten the balance right. As I've written to you before, it's Americans who buy little bits of junk for their shelves and Halloween decorations that get thrown in the trash. We consumers are responsible for the balance of payments issues between us and China. Your whole 'take' on Obama is so backwards/180 degrees wrong that I don't know where to begin.

Gretchen Robinson

yep, you got all the Romney talking points down pat but there's no truth to any of them.
We need a smarter security system "to thwart terrorism" not more soldiers and big expensive hardware. It's a new 'war' and it also includes "the minds and hearts" of the people whose country we invade and occupy. When I say, security, I mean the CIA, NSA, and other services cooperating not running their own fiefdom and not sharing info. (such as might have prevented 9/11).

It is Romney who is "unworthy to be president" and for different reasons, George Ross is likewise "unworthy" for further office.

You may say that Mitt or George are unworthy for office but that's just your opinion Gretchen. Both are fine and upstanding men. After 9/11, the efforts of the Bush administration made coorporation between the security agencies a reality and they all share information today, again, thanks to George Bush. President Clinton cut the military budget which is why our intelligence gathering capabilities were poor. President Obama is doing the same thing as President Clinton by cutting the military budget. Here's another fact: The Obama administration is covering up their mistakes made in Libyia. The administration denied that is was an act of terrorism, instead they blamed it on a YouTube video, how poor is that?? It's very poor, and smacks of appeasing the muslims who killed our U.S Ambassador. Just my opinion though

What is a fact Daniel is that the booing is an example of the Heroux supporters being arrogant, disrespectful and more important, classless, end of story and I've said enough on this subject. Wendy: I am not suggesting that totalitarianism would be accomplished in four years. Maybe not in our life time. But I think we are much closer than we realize.

Admittedly, I don't think either party is all that interested in protecting our liberties and upholding the constitution. However, I do think we have a better chance of reversing or at least slowing the trend by electing Republican candidates rather than the Democratic candidates.
Obviously, this is my opinion based on my perception. You may be perfectly content with the direction we are headed. That's what elections are for. This week we will determine which candidates from which party did a better job bamboozling the electorate. IMO, the Dem's have this down to a science. So I think you're safe.

He's in the Republican bubble/echo chamber and so are you. Time to face up to the fact that Reality is about to bite you and your kind. Gretchen,
That's not the truth and you know it, you're just citing the same old left wing liberal spin. Gov. Romney has never said that he would destroy FEMA, nor the Dept. of Education, or Health and Human Services. As for the military budget, it's been cut to the poing that it has left our troops vulnerable so spending some money on the military budget is needed to support our troops and intelligence agencies. If you really took time to look at Mr. Romney's 5 point plan you would know that it doesn't include more tax cuts for the rich 1 percenters, he's said many times that he wants to extend the Bush era tax cuts to include the middle class, he's also said that the rich 1 are fine with the current tax cut and they don't need another tax cut. The biggest lie that the democrats tell everyone is that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will do away with medicare for seniors, that's again a liberal lie, the truth is for our current seniors, medicare will not be touched. For our future seniors who are the baby boomers and generation x such as me, there would be the option of having a vouture, or having medicare. Personally, I like the vouture option because it will give me the flexibility of shopping for and choosing an affordable healthcare option when I turn the retirement age.

Gretchen Robinson

10:08 pm on Saturday, November 3, 2012

I saw Romney in clips saying that he wants to do away with FEMA. He said it.
Military, has to adapt to the times not fight yesterday's wars. It needs to do more with less. Sec. of Defense Leon Panetta has been doing that and he's refreshingly honest and forthright, too. He's well liked and effective.
Romney knows as much about the military as he does about foreign policy. He'd call in people like John Bolton to his side. Egad, the return of the Bush Neocons. That's available online too, his cabinet appointments for his first day. The day he destroys the Affordable Care Act even though it's essentially the healthcare plan he started in Mass.
As for Medicare, it's a ploy to tell seniors to 'vote for Mitt' and plan to stiff the next generations. People work hard for a lot of years for their Soc. Security. If we weren't over spending on the military, if we were paying attention to procurement and justifying new weapons, we'd have plenty of money for the generation of school children getting an education, young people going to college not being weighed down for life with extremely high loans. But no! The Right keeps yawping on about Obama cutting the military and the truth is he did not!!!
Vouchers are a scam and you know it. You can't send a voucher check to an 85 year old elder and have him/her choose between different plans. That's just plain wrong. Vouchers are simply a way for the Feds to cheap out on seniors, to cheat them.

The Affordable healthcare Act will balloon the federal budget and be a jobs killer for business and will ruin our economy Gretchen, think instead of listening to the liberal spin that the left wackos are planting in your head. Stop watching CNN,NPR and anything liberal, the reality is as I stated earlier is that it's just a fallacy and a lie what the liberals are telling you about Mitt Romney's healthcare plan. Medicare indeed won't be touched for our current seniors, and future generations when they reach retirement age will have a choice of the medicare system as it always has been, or a voucher for you to shop and smartly choose for yourself what type of healthcare you need, not one that the federal government tells you that you can have. The middle class will be paying for Obamacare with a huge tax increase and we will have a system similar to Canada where it will take months if not years just to see a doctor for an ailment. Mitt Romney's healthcare plan is a better option because the individual states will have the option to craft their own plan that is tailored for people who live in the states, not the federal government telling you what type of healthcare plan you must have. I like Mitt Romney's plan also because it will give me the choice of choosing healthcare options between state lines which creates competition among healthcare companies and reduces costs, not big government telling me healthcare I have to buy.

I think John Boehner agrees with you. He was on TV and suggested to be bipartisian. I hope our newly re-elected President and members of his party takes this to heart. Where is the common ground, I doubt the common ground is on taxes; however, maybe smart spending in needed areas can be common ground issues. I hope both the Republicans and Democrats can work together. The last thing we need is a country that is divided; but that is exactly what we are, a nation that is divided, the election results prove that. I just don't want to see America turn into a socialist nation where everyone is dependent on the government for everything because big government doesn't work, a smaller, smarter government is best and I hope our leaders in Washington and on Beacon Hill on both sides of the aisle see this need.

The biggest challenge for President Barack Obama, in my opinion is how to bring the nation together if this is even possible. I believe that President Obama, and House Speaker John Boehner must set a serious tone of cooperation and bipartisianship if we are to see real progress. Here on the local level, that bipartisianship must take shape as well. Here's to hoping that members of each party will help to provide real workable, viable solutions to our nation's problems.

Folks......our idiot friend left out the FACTS in his post - CBO REFERS TO THE "FISCAL CLIFF" - GOPigs plan to obstruct and the markets are antsy.....

Anyway this excerpt addresses Lunt's bleating....

However, the fiscal cliff remains the primary source of concern in the market and, according to an article on Wall Street Journal, the CBO last night released a new report that warns that if policy makers do not act before the end of the year, the economy would contract by 0.5% in 2013 and the unemployment rate would jump from 7.9% to 9.1% by the end of 2013.

US equities dropped for a second day on fiscal cliff concerns despite better-than-expected data from the US that showed a marked improvement in the trade balance with a solid gain in exports of 3.1% in September. However, S&P500 closed 1% lower while Dow Jones lost 1.2% and the negative sentiment continued in the Asian trading session where most regional indices currently trade with losses.

Was the election stolen from Mitt Romney? Did President Obama steal the election?? It certainly looks that way.

Brian,
Obviously you don't know what real facts are if you even read the article. There is fact based evidence in the article that suggests, and I mean only suggests that the election was stolen from Mitt Romney, not to say that it did happen; however, the evidence is there. Of course Brian, you and other liberal lefties just dismiss these articles as lies and mistruths and would rather believe what the liberal media hacks tell you.

This is what will happen if the tax cuts expire. This is what the liberals voted for in the recent election. The moral of the story is tax increases will ruin the economy!
