Wanted: Friendly Ideas to Fill an Empty Space
If you could wave the magic wand to fill the vacant Friendly's with anything, what would it be?
The 'Boro has its fair share of vacant buildings and shops, don't you think? Some have sat vacant for years while other see businesses rotate in and out.
But, if you could have a business occupy an empty location what would you like to see happen? Each week, we'll feature one empty space, building, lot or area in Attleboro and our eaders what they would like to see if they had the power to fill that space.
We want to hear what you'd like to see occupy Attleboro. Sound off in the comments section below!

I think we already have too many restaurants and retail in the area all fighting for a smaller and smaller slice of our budgets. Maybe something fun, something like a Chuckie Cheese only geared towards adults.

Problem with the former Friendly's is it's built to be a restaurant and I agree there's enough of that around here. How about a Trader Joe's in Attleboro?..maybe in that empty spot next to the dollar store on Pleasant Street. If you've never been to a Trader Joe's it's really a great store.

More banks! We already have a Wall Street near the center. There are like 3 banks in the center, several credit unions and a few banks on pleasant st. What's one more.

I'd like to see a bakery/coffee shop. We're at a loss of them in this area. Have a space for local performers to have open mic nights, poetry slams, local art for sale on the walls, and some good clean non-alcoholic fun. A place where young adults and adults can relax and take in the local color over some good coffee and baked goods.

The only thing that will work there is another restaurant. The lot is too small for anything else.
How about an IHOP? Attleboro lacks late night dining options.

I'm with Andy a Trader Joe's in Attleboro somewhere. I agree with Dan on IHOP since that placve is built for a reastaurant.

I agree that a Trader Joe's in that spot would be a great addition to Attleboro.

I would love a year round Farmers Market with an Education center. We could host family food seminars, growing lectures. canning and preserving classes and general wellness infromation. The best part is you could find your favorite local products all year long.... That is what I would like to see.....

I agree with Heather, a year round Farmer's Market, classes and a place to showcase small local businesses would be awesome. Its great to want something there thats familiar but out of reach (IHop, Dennys, Red Lobster, Sonic, Golden Corral, Joe's Crab Shack, I could go on for days) but that money goes back out of our community to a big corporate office. Supporting small local businesses keeps the money right here in OUR city! And classes and seminars helps enrich families as well as help them help themselves through rough times. Giving people tools to help themselves is what will be the difference between barely making it and really improving their quality of life. So my vote is for a community education center! Good idea Heather!

I would also like a closer Trader Joes, just not in that location. The traffic on Pleasant Street is horrid already! How about downtown in the building accross from Morins/ the old Berards Building and make the parking where the Olde Barn was... just a thought!

I'd love to see a Market Basket or TJ's in town as well, but a better local may be the vacant Shaw's in SA. Now that the one bridge is done and the other is almost done, traffic flow is a lot better and that area was hard hit by the bridge closing. That's another article though huh? IHOP is a good idea.

About the vacant Shaws in South Attleboro, I've heard that Stop & Shop is leasing it and leaving it empty to discourage competition. Also have noticed the Stop & Shop in South Attleboro seems to be dying a slow death., Maybe being sandwiched between B. J's and Walmarts Super-Center is doing them in. A Whole Foods Super Market or Roche Brothers Super Market would be nice in the vacant Shaws or the soon to be vacant South Attleboro Stop & Shop.

In response to Dan Devine, not Kendelle. I like your ideas but as someone who is in that S. Attleboro Stop & Shop daily (I work in the plaza next to it and go there daily for my lunch/dinner) I have to say, they are by no mean dying a slow death. While some times I go in there and it may be slower that usual, it does tons of business and I drive out of my way to shop there (I live on Oakhill Ave) because the staff and level of cleanliness is much better. Never mind that I despise the Pleasant St S&S's self check out registers. It's a pity to see that there is more empty buildings than incoming businesses. The old S. Attleboro Shaw's plaza feels like a ghost town! A closer Trader Joes would be wonderful, but I'd take a Market Basket or Whole Foods too!

I would love to see a Steak 'n Shake or Shoney's come to the Northeast. MMMMMM the shakes are awesome at Steak 'n Shake and the Chicken Fried Steak and Strawberry pie are delicious at Shoney's! Do I have your mouth watering yet? We make it a point to eat at these places when we travel in the South.

There is only one thing Attleboro is missing. Its very own winery, or brewery.
Just sayin'

Coffee shop might work and but that would be 3 in a half mile stretch so not sure that would play out too well.
While busy most of the time the truth is that the location has too few tables to make it work in today's volume based approach. You need more seats and I think this would hamper any future food service effort at that location...unless they expanded...

I say yes to that idea. Something like North Attleboro's Soup Works. They have the best homemade items, soups, salads, etc. They started out small and delivered to my former employer's work for lunches. I don't know if they still deliver, but they would thrive in Attleboro. Great idea Nick!!

I would ask that you include some type of homemade bread or roll as a side for the soup/chowder. Also, chili is a great idea with some corn bread and low sodium. You can do a lot with soups and they are so hearty. Other than that I would not get too fancy. Too much can be so overwhelming. Keep it simple but change the menu everyday to include one soup/chowder of the day. I would urge you to take a look at the menu that they have at Soup Works. They do up a monthly menu with a different soup a day and they make there own rolls to go with the soup. Keep us posted on the progress of this.

yes thats what we seem to have most ideas about is that and prefferablly a meal and soup of the day with chilli as well and we are hoping for a nice mid sized menu with unique meals that were a sunday typed meal back in the day and we are also geared toward a strong breakfeast on the weekends
