UPDATE: Traffic Barrel Covers Seekonk Veterans Statue

Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco says it looks tacky.

Update 11:45 a.m. Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco contacted Patch to say his comment on Thursday that the Department of Public Works was responsible for putting the barrel on the statue was incorrect.

"The information that I received was in error, and it had come from reliable sources," Cavaco said.

Update 10:10 a.m. Seekonk Veterans Agent Seth Bai posted a message on Seekonk Patch taking blame for the barrel on the statue.

He wrote:

The D.P.W. is not to be blamed for this mishap. I had informed the D.P.W. that I needed a Barrel to conceal the monument. I had said I purchased a Patriotic-Banner to wrap around the Barrel to present and unveil the monument at the ceremony on Saturday morning during the groundbreaking. There was absolutley no disrespect intended by any participants. Lets move on from this topic so that we can still admire & celebrate tomorrows Veterans Day Observance. ~ Thank You, Seth Bai ( Veterans Service Officer)

As of this morning, the barrel is no longer on the statue. It is standing next to the statue with a red, white and blue banner stating "2012 Veterans Day."

_____

A new statue in front of Seekonk Town Hall meant to honor veterans is featuring an unusual accessory. A traffic barrel with reflective orange sheeting was placed over the statue Thursday, shielding most of it. A source told Patch late Thursday night that the barrel had been removed.

Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco told Seekonk Patch the decision to cover the statue was made by Public Works Department officials as a way to prevent people from walking into it at night. He said he would not have chosen to do this.

"It looks tacky," Cavaco said. "I would have put barrels around the statue."

A dedication of the statue will take place Saturday during a veterans ceremony that is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.

Put a mulch bed around it...people should be walking on the sidewalk...not the lawn.

About the poll question.
Is the barrel there to protect the statue or the moron(s) who keep walking into it?

Why do we need to protect people from themselves? If they walk into it once, chances are they won't do it again.

Once AGAIN Mr. Cavaco has shown how he does not get his facts straight before he speaks. He blamed the DPW for putting the barrel over the new statue in front of town hall before he investigated the situation. Maybe he should have had a meetin before he made the statement that he did. Or is it because, as he said at this weeks Selectman's meetin, "Sometimes we have to go out 2 or 3 nights a day." Watch the meetin replay and you will hear it at the end.

I must apologize to Mr Cavaco. As I watched the rerun of the BOS meetin I find that he did not make the statement as I stated he did.

Perhaps a decorative wrought iron fence? A very wise police officer said to me yesterday, "Praise in public. Criticize in private." A good practice that saves both the critic and the criticized from embarrassment.

In my opinion let's call it exactly what it is. Mr. Cavaco has a personal problem with the DPW Superintendent. It's no secret and every town employee knows about it. Even two previous Selectman have discussed it on their cable show. Mr. Cavaco will continue this unprofessional behavior until the rest of the Board wakes up and calls him out. Our inept Town Administrator is a large part of the problem as she has lost control of the town and allowed Mr. Cavaco to run the show. My guess/opinion is that this duo has already come up with a trumped up record of minor paperwork mistakes in order to not continue the DPW Superintendent's employment when his contract comes up. I can assure you that I will contact every parent in our league and explain how much DPW has improved our fields under this Superintendent. My plan will be to fill the room for the public hearing. Oh, and I remind everyone that Mr. Cavaco's term is up in April!!!!

"...Cavaco's term is up in April!!!!"

It is time that the Grand Inquisitor by swapped out. Two terms as selectman is enough for anybody.

Ron C: Thank you for this insightful entry. As for Mr. Cavaco, the jury is still out as I believe it is for all of us. Gracie Allen once said, "Don't put a period where God has put a comma." Without the comma, Saul of Tarsus who persecuted the early Christians never would have become the Apostle Paul, author of the most beloved of Christian teachings, the Epistle on Love. Never doubt the transforming power of God's love. If Mr. Cavaco were to open his heart to that divine love and to the message in I Corinthians 13 and "make love [his] aim" in this town, I would enthusiastically support his re-election.

Board of Selectman Chair Francis Cavaco said the barrel "LOOKS TACKY" to grab some attention & make the D.P.W. look bad, (Kinda jumped the gun). Looks like Selectman Cavaco "LOOKS TACKY" now. We have the same type of problem in Attleboro with some jerks as officials on our City Council.~ VOTE THEM OUT! ~ B.T.W. ~ Very nice Statue honoring our Veterans

Mr Cavaco has once again heard one side of a story and ran with it. Hopefully some day he will learn that there are two sides to every story and he will do his homework before he makes statements, in the future, that are not true.

Joe, making fun of how people talk is unbecoming for an adult conversation.

Jonathan, so are patronizing comments after the person already apologized and corrected himself. However if Cavaco had, in fact, made the statement there would have been nothing wrong with pointing it out.

Maybe we can give Joe the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the "g" on his key board is not functioning:)

Somebody's got to do it. Until Jonathan pointed it out, I did not even notice Joe's dig in his "apology".
