TELL US: Do You Agree with 'The Chronicle's' Endorsements

The newspaper endorsed Democratic challengers Paul Heroux and A. Keith Carreiro in the local state House races? What do you think about those choices?

Local newspaper The Sun Chronicle is calling for change with its endorsements for the two local state House races. In an editorial that appeared in the Tuesday edition titled "New Faces Needed in Mass. House," the newspaper recommended voters choose Democrat Paul Heroux in the election for the 2nd Bristol District (which includes most of Attleboro) and Democrat A. Keith Carreiro in the contest for the 4th Bristol District (which includes Seekonk and several other communities).

Both Democrats are facing Republican incumbents coming off their first terms in the House, with Heroux challenging Rep. George Ross and Carreiro taking on Rep. Steven Howitt.

Regarding the incumbents, The Chronicle wrote, "Both have had lackluster first terms and now face energetic opponents with fresh ideas."

What do you think of the newspaper's endorsements and what effect do you think they will have on the election? Do you think newspapers should make endorsements? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Note: Attleboro-Seekonk Patch does not make endorsements. That is not an indication of an opinion that newspapers/news websites should not make endorsements. The editor of this website also writes most of the government articles and making endorsements would take away from neutrality of the coverage.

I think the endorsements are a long time coming. I mean after reading the article it seemed that a special election might have been order. Ideas are great but the means to execute them is what is important I feel that the 2 candidates that were endorsed can and will.

It is well known that The "Honarable Kevin J Dumas" is not a fan of George Ross or Beatty Porier. It is also well known that The Sun Chronicle crafts its stories to portray the Attleboro Administration in a more positive light (Mike Kirby is brother to Brian Kirby, City Councilor). Perhaps loyal Patch readers sees inconsistancies between how stories are relayed here and in the SC.

Also, during the hot debate between Paul and George Ross.. PH mentioned that he is close with the Mayor because of the deal between the Mayor and his mom when she was selling the Ashley Building. Interesting dont you think?

This is the Mayors endorsement. A vote for Paul is a vote for Kevin... BEWARE!!!!

He said, and I quote, "Come to think of it, I've worked with the mayor" on the sale of his mothers building. NEVER said he was "Close" with the mayor.

I am no fan of the Mayor but he is right about the two failures, Ross and Porier - Add Richard Ross and you got a trifecta of ZERO - Attleboro suffers from a lack of energy - all we have are place holders who get in because they are GOP but are all back-benchers and ineffective - the people of the area should stop and think about why other parts of the state get new business, new resources, etc. You need leadership and these 3 representing the area have done NOTHING worthy of my vote or anyone else's vote. It's time to find a way to push out these failures.

@Darren ~ I agree & I'm also not a fan of our lifetime Mayor. You've got it right on the three loosers we have representing us, why don't people get it? It's time for a change!

No, I don't agree. Mr. Heroux hasn't told us how he would pay for all of his studies! Probably more taxes. He has a fresh mouth and doesn't seem like he would work well with others. A person can be book smart but that doesn't mean he can help the City of Attleboro.

Paul said before that every state agency has a research and performance measure division that are already paid for, they just aren't doing the work that needs to be done and this is where Paul's leadership will come into play And to think that a State Reps salary would pay for his studies. You people are Amazing.

I'm not surprised by the endorsements of the Sun Chronicle because in my opinion, the Sun Chronicle is a liberal leaning newspaper. I don't agree with their endorsements, the incumbents are fine upstanding men with excellent track records on Beacon Hill.

Richard,
Come on! Excellent track records? Really? With regards to Ross: What really turned me off on Ross was during the first public hearing about the proposed development at the corner of May Street and Rte 1. That directly affected Ross' ward and he spoke not one word during the hearing. Similar to the majority of his tenure as our State Rep. I view ross as a politician that panders to certain groups at the cost of the entire electorate.

The Sun Chronicle's endorsement of Keith Carreiro is ridiculous. It said Carreiro has "new ideas", but it has been reported he plagiarized other people's work. (read the Herald News last week) He claimed he didn't know enough about the economy, jobs, and the budget. Great new ideas?? I don't think so!

The Chronicle also said he was an adjunct professor at two state colleges, but he corrected everyone at a debate in Norton that he is actually not a professor. What?

The Chronicle also said he was a long time Swansea school teacher. Apparently that is not true either. He only taught in Swansea for three years. I was told by friends in Swansea that the schools did not want to rehire him in the 4th year which would have gotten him tenure.

The Sun Chronicle's endorsement was biased against a first term Republican. The Sun reporters were so determined to lie about Rep. Howitt's record that they didn't even do their homework on Carreiro. What a joke! Take your pick, the Chronicle or Carreiro. Jokes.

I believe that the Sun Chronicle's endorsement of Paul Heroux is correct. I can't say that I have read much in the Sun Chronicle in the last two years about George Ross's accomplishments. His display of vulgarity in the last debate certainly doesn't qualify him to be in any elected position. I am looking forward to some fresh young blood on Beacon Hill, it is long over due. Cast you vote for Paul Heroux, George Ross is only in this to bolster his retirement. His hand gesture at the debate shows us what he really thinks of his constituents and the Veterans that have served this country.

As a State Rep, George T. Ross is one of the biggest failures in the history of Attleboro. He's a disgrace and needs to be booted out of office! The Sun Chronicle got it right endorsing of Paul Heroux.

I met Mr. Heroux once, he kept stressing he would not be bound by party affiliation. He would "work for people". I found this remarkably naive, obviously he hadn't learned about "go along, to get along" in a one party state.

Just think, within living memory the Chronicle was regarded as "one of the last two Republican papers in the state". Of course, that was when it was the Attleboro Sun and Attleboro was a safely Republican district.

I am surprised but pleased that the SC picked Paul but they got the reason exactly right. Ross has been ineffective and a willing back-bencher as I had said many times in the past few months. No accomplishments and no impact does not make a good representative. Paul hopefully will have his chance to accomplish something. It's hard to regain the two years Ross blew / wasted. I hope Paul will re-double his efforts to do something for the area of significance.

Darren,
I suppose it is easy to see Ross as a "back bencher", but that view chooses to overlook the real problem. Massachusetts is a one-party state, that party is Democratic and Ross is a Republican. I suppose that your response to this is that we should elect a Democrat who will "go along to get along". That is not a solution that appeals to me. I would much prefer that we had two parties and some competition for votes.

@Tisiphone - If you disagreed that when the GOP holds one party rule such as during the Bush admin - if you fought against that as well - I might agree - but I sense its only Dem majorities trouble you - Bill Bowles was effective without "going along to get along" - he helped save the RMV - that was effective and he worked with GOP leadership in Attleboro - he did a good job but was forced out for a man that basically wanted to use the job as a retirement plan - Betty and Ross and Sen Ross have done NOTHING. Leadership can span parties.....I think Paul understands that and will actually get some work done for the area.

Tisiphone

9:43 pm on Monday, November 5, 2012

Darren, although I do favor the Republicans; I favor a two party system more. I am not sure that "helping save the RMV" was as clean a deal as might be hoped. Ownership of the previous RMV was interesting, I suspect that someone's head was on the chopping block.

Aside from that, with a two party system, one party or the other will always "control" the Senate. It seems to me that this has deteriorated to a system of "we aren't doing anything till we get our turn in control". It would seem to me that in an efficient two party system, the individual Senators would have to please their constituents or not be returned. (How often do you think Teddy Kennedy worried about that?). I think this would tend to elevate the game of politics.

Am I serious about this, yes. I am considering a move to North Carolina, a generally two party state (there are other reasons). While I remain here, I will probably continue to pull the levers marked "R" and ignore those marked "D". There has to be some sort of opposition. The number of politicans elected here after running "unopposed" is to our shame.
