Should Schools Be in Session Tuesday?
Attleboro's public schools are scheduled to be in session Tuesday. Some people disagree with this decision.
Attleboro residents with children in the local public school system received an automated phone call Monday evening from Superintendent Pia Durkin stating schools are scheduled to be open Tuesday. If it is later determined they should not open, parents will receive another call early Tuesday morning.
Several people have blasted the decision on Attleboro Patch's Facebook page, especially because there are a reported 1,500 National Grid customers without power, and the number is expected to grow.
"It is RIDICULOUS," wrote Ana Luis. "Really school opened? Seekonk & Cumberland are closed tomorrow, yet Attleboro thinks its a good idea to send kids to school with power lines and trees down. I think the mayor and Superintendent Pia Durkin need to rethink this."
Not everybody disagreed with the decision.
"The storm was nowhere near as bad as Irene," wrote Tina Ristaino Schwab. "By tomorrow this will be a memory. Why keep the kids home for no reason? They get out late enough in the year as it is."
What do you think of schools being open? Tells us in the comments section below and vote in our poll.

Tomorrow it won't be a memory... I'll still be without power because National Grid told us they couldn't even give us a time frame because out area of the city is so bad (I live on Oakhill Ave by Briggs corner)

There shouldn't be school until the state of emergency is lifted. We still have no power in Hebronville and it's absurd to expect the kids to get ready if there's still no power in the am. There's debris all over the roads and Rocklawn was closed when we tried to pass. Let's get the power back on and the roads cleared first.

Mass.gov has on its website that, "due to the current weather situation, the Governor has called for a delayed start time for non-emergency state employees working in Executive Branch agencies for 10:00AM on Tuesday, October 30, 2012." The city of Attleboro didn't even give the kids a delay. I think it is safe to say that The State of Emergency hasn't been lifted. If it was the Mass.gov website would have noted it.

I agree with most here. Let the dust settle, keep the buses off the roads in the morning. Although the storm wasn't as fierce as predicted, Regroup, cleanup and plan for a fresh start on Wednesday.
Add the fact that hundreds of families (mine included) could possibly be without power overnight alone, should be enough information to make the right decision here. AAGGHHHHHHH

blasphemy to think safety is no longer a concern. Everyone is saying to stay off streets unless 100% necessary-- so youre going to throw NEW DRIVERS on the streets? Inconsiderate. Not to mention Bishop Feehan has commuters far out as Dedham, and Feehan wont cancel until Attleboro does.

Cumberland, Seekonk, Foxboro, Coyle, New Testament and various other schools are shut down. Considering Attleboro is one of the closest bordering towns from RI which has been EVACUATED I think it's a mindless question that safety should come first and there should be no shool for Attleboro or Bishop Feehan.

As a driver, not 'new' but haven't seen it all, i can see what these other kids are saying. But even though i agree there shouldn't be any school tomorrow, the whole driving thing still is irrelevant. At some point you have to learn to drive in all weather. Everyday isn't dry roads and sunshine. Winters coming up. When theres an inch of snow are we gonna commit to taking the bus everyday? No were gonna learn to drive in it. But in my opinion it should be a fun drive in to school if we have it lol but on topic, school still shouldn't be on.

The new driver comment holds no water. So when you get a drivers license you can't ride the bus?
That being said, this is silly. Storm is to wax and wane untill 2am before the intensity dies off. They should have waited to see what happens overnight before making the call one way or another. Regardless, we should all be thankful the storm was not as strong here as it was in coastal RI and that the city up to this point has done a great job when it comes to preparedness and communication (even if we don't like what they are saying).
Seems to me the city learned from the missteps during Irene and for the most part made better choices this time around.

From a student's POV, the only challenge about tomorrow will be the roads. Being a new driver who has to bring a younger sibling and zed sibling's friend to school everyday means I have to be extra alert and aware every second on the road. If this hurricane is anything we've seen in New Jersey or even the Cape, the roads will not welcoming to many new/student drivers.

Ultimately parents have the choice as to send their children to school if it's open. If you send your child and something happens, unless you are planning to litigate, Dr. Durkin and Mayor Dumas' saying it's safe really is of no consequence. I'm not a fan of Dr. Durkin but I don't think that she wants children to be harmed. She and the mayor are probably thinking about all the people that will complain at the end of the year if we go over in days because of a multitude of snow storms. Having grown up in California where this heavy rain and wind is typical winter for 3 months I don't think it's that bad. Will my kids go to school today? When the sun comes up and I take a look around my neighborhood, I will make that decision for my 3 kids. Personal responsibility. Thanks for the phone call Dr. D I'll make my own choice!
Sarah
5:46 am on Tuesday, October 30, 2012
I appreciate all of these comments from very caring parents who worry about their children’s safety. Unfortunately not all children are as lucky to have parent such as you.
Hundreds of Attleboro children will be left home alone today while the parents go to work because they can not afford a day off. What is safer for those children? In school, supervised? Getting a hot meal? Or home on their own with questionable safety conditions? This is the reason we will be in session today. It is your right as a parent to choose keeping your child home today. Exercise your right, but there are other children that depend on the services that the school system provides.

Sarah, I happen to live in a neighborhood where parents are getting in vans and leaving to work in mills and factories in New Bedford and Fall River right now. During school vacations and holidays their kids are unsupervised and run the streets all day long until their parents come home after 5pm. I see the kids playing in their yards and street or just sitting on the steps to their homes looking bored. I'm glad the school is open for them.

Oh Goodness. Such Angst. If you don't think it is safe, don't send your kids. If you can't take your daily shower, get over it. We all bathe way to much anyway. If all you have for breakfast is ceral that requires milk, you didn't plan well. And if school goes past June 24th, no whining.

Half of the commenters on this page are high school students, so of course they don't want school.
Aside from the occasional downed branch, the roads are clear and safe. Crews spent the entire night cleaning up. If you still don't feel safe or comfortable sending your kids to school, you have the power to keep them home. It's as easy as that. The schools can't hold it against you, as stated above. Many parents have to go back to work today and those with small children (even young teens!) can't leave them home alone.
As for the milk and cereal comment, the only way your milk went bad that fast is if your refrigerator sucks and isn't airtight, or if you kept opening and shutting it (or if it was already a month old, in which case, ew). I went a week without power after Hurricane Irene, kept the fridge shut the entire weeky, and my milk was still good when the power came back on. This is like Hurricane 101, so buck up and drink the milk.
The ONLY criticism I have re: Durkin's decision to open schools today is that the high school is being used as a shelter. Where are those people going to go? Home? Or are they being allowed to stay? It would be great if Durkin or Mayor Dumas could acknowledge that instead of completely blowing over it.
