Seekonk Stores Evacuated Due to Report of Gunman

No man is found.

Several stores along Route 6 in Seekonk were evacuated Sunday afternoon after police received a report at about 4 p.m. that a man was was carrying a rifle through a parking lot toward Home Depot, according to the Providence Journal.

The newspaper reported:

The police first evacuated Home Depot and Stop & Shop and then moved on to Michaels, Petco, Golf Town and Bed, Bath & Beyond, said Lt. David Dyson. Each closing lasted about 5 to 10 minutes.

"We were unable to locate him," Dyson said.

Dyson also said, according to the newspaper, that police checked with two local stores that sell guns, and none reported the sale of a rifle.

A girlfriend of mine got evacuated from Stop & Shop. Why did police empty the stores and make people go outside to the parking lot where a gunman might be? She told me the cops would not tell anyone what was going on and they were all easy targets standing around in a wide open lot.

Good point, paul. Wasn't there a school shooting a number of years ago where the killers set up an ambush outside the school? With all these stores being evacuated, imagine the carnage had there been one or two wacko's with automatic weapons.

The man was confirmed not to be in the parking lot, so I guess they figured he entered a store. Myself, I'd much rather be outside able to run away, than locked down in a store... Just my opinion.

Hey Idiot, they had information he entered the store. They do not have time to stop and explain what is going. Another monday morning quarterback. You called the police not a phycologist or anyone else who wants to explain everything. Not the fault of police that people can't follow instructions and just leave. Everyone wants a reason or to be noisy, like they have time for that!

Bill, the report was a man in the parking lot with a rifle. The cops showed up and made everyone leave the safety of the store and go outside where the man was last seen. If someone walked into Home Depot or Stop & Shop with a rifle, workers would notice. Police don't always do what's best, sometimes they are wrong and this may be one of those times. Everyone that comments on these links is a Monday morning quarterback, including you. Evacuating people into an unsecure area is almost as ignorant as your comment.
