Seekonk Mourns Death of Library Director

Sharon St. Hilaire was remembered during Wednesday's Board of Selectmen meeting.

Sharon St. Hilaire, the director of the Seekonk Public Library, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon.

In her memory, Michael Durkay, chairman of the Board of Library Trustees, spoke of St. Hilaire's accolades in the library science and arts community during Wednesday night's Board of Selectmen meeting.

"Sharon was an innovative leader who never lost her passion for the community she served," Durkay stated. "During her 34-year career at the library, she served on local, regional, and national committees that have led to increased funding and technology for libraries across the nation. In 2008, her work was recognized by the Massachusetts Library Association and she was inducted into the Hall of Fame, an elite group of librarians who have made a significant impact on Massachusetts libraries."

According to Durkay, Seekonk was where St. Hilaire truly lived and called home. The library building on Newman Avenue, and the fledgling Meadows that surround it, would not exist if not for her determination and vision, he said. The Seekonk Public Library was also named one of the top in the country due to her dedication.

"Throughout her life, Sharon fought persistent health issues, but always maintained her focus to make the Seekonk Public Library the very best," he said with tears in his eyes. "While she may be gone, her passion and vision will remain. We are thankful for all that she has done for our library and the citizens of Seekonk."

According to Durkay, the staff of the library will have a memorial book available at the front desk. The public is encouraged to visit the library to share their thoughts and memories in this book to be presented to Sharon’s family in the near future.

My sister cared deeply for the library and all of her friends she made in her 34 years there. My family is grateful for the care and support you gave her. Edward Davis - Sharon's brother.
