POLL: Obama-Romney Presidential Debate - Who Won?

The town hall-style debate gave voice to questions from uncommitted voters. Who handled the issues best?

President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney were in Long Island, N.Y. Tuesday night, answering questions Tuesday night from voters who said they were still undecided while also managing to go at each other.

The questions covered topics that included energy costs, unemployment, immigration, tax codes and more.

Wednesday morning, Patch will have flash survey results from Massachusetts political activists and leaders, both Republican and Democratic.

But right now, what about you: what do you think? Who would you say 'won' this second presidential debate? Tell us in the comments sections below.

Another moderator totes Barry's clubs for him. But he can't hide this dismal economy on his watch. And undecided voters aren't fools. Thank God for the fact-checking sites. CNN's Anderson Cooper already called out Crowley for lying about the "act of terror" speech in the Rose Garden. Turns out Obama did not call that attack in Libya an "act of terror" but referred obliquely to "acts of terror that ... uh ... will not ... uh ... be tolerated." Romney was correct: It took the administration five days to own up. Next debate on foreign policy should be interesting, given Crowley's exposed lie. Folks, are you as fed up with the media?

"Folks, are you as fed up with the media?"

Have been since 2008 and the bashing they gave Hillary Clinton. Still, like a battered woman, she's loyal to her man, or in this case: party. It diminishes her an awful lot, but maybe she's ready to retire, anyway.

He could’ve just noted the phrase “47 percent” in passing with a zinger about Romney being out of touch, but he went on to name some of the major groups that compose the 47 percent, then effortlessly dovetailed it with his goals for the next four years. This is whole new election now. I can’t imagine the polls not moving back in the president’s favor over the next five days, and will be watching them very closely. The final debate on Monday is all about foreign policy. I presume the president will bring it once again. After all, this is Romney’s weakest area, and so this election could be sufficiently wrapped up with another performance like tonight’s.

No that'd make too much sense.. Darren would rather eat the garbage fed to the sheeple by the Obama Admin and George Soros funded media organizations such as Media Matters.. The UN amb Rice, the admin and the state dept all played the attack off as a spontaneous reaction to some unseen youtube clip. They lied for a week plus, and last night Romney was set up by Crowley and CNN while they pushed the lie further on millions of Americans. Disgraceful. Romney is far from acceptable, but far less of an evil than mr Obama. Their answer by the left and liberal media? Throw Hillary under the bus again..

JB The government of the United States is not a company. A company's goal is to maximize profits, and if that means laying off people and harming those individuals' ability to provide for their families so be it. The government's goal is to maximize the prosperity of all citizens, not make them unemployed. These are two fundamentally different goals, two different visions of what that particular entity should be. The country should not be governed as business. A successful business man could be a very valuable advisor, but business success is not the end all to be all of how to select a president.

And helpful to have had Mitt Romney bring up Obama's pension. Obama's pension, invested in companies from China.

Watch the video clip or google a search for it, where Mitt Romney questions Obama on his pension. Start with the video clip available online from CBSNews.com:

Currently the National Debt Clock in real time is: $16,182,374,117,253. And by the time you finish reading this, the figure will be substantially higher. Nearly $6 Trillion of that $16+ Trillion in new DEBT, came from the past 4 Obama years in office.

$6 trillion to continune to pay for 2 wars and the bush era tax cuts. Sick of hearing how republicans are more concerned about the defict that democarats. That's the biggest lie going. When Regan and Bush 1 were in office the deficit went up. Clinton turned it into a budget surplus. Bush 2 cam in and ran up the deficit with 2 wars not paid for, tax cuts (That Ryan voted for) that were not paid for. Tickle down economica did not work in the 80's, did not work inth e 00's and will not work again now.

Why is China being "allowed" to "steal" so much IP-Intellectual Property from the United States.

And now that we know that Obama's pension is heavily-tied to Chinese companies, and to investments in both China and (running through the Cayman's, think: tax haven), what has Obama been doing for the past 4 years while in office? Ohh, those big, expensive tax-payer funded vacations on a private jet. Oh that's right. Nancy Pelosi too with her expensive jet-travel to/from. And all the while, this country's IP-Intellectual Property falls through the cracks in lands in some other countries hands.

Was the empty chair at Harvard University when Obama claims he attended? Has Obama always had an empty chair philosophy/problem, or was Clint Eastwood right-on-the-money.

Hey America, wake up! This is your IP-Intellectual Property. And for those of us, myself included, who are Inventors, and we have patents in our own name, learn to use the court system to your/our advantage.

Mitt does a nice job debating both Obama and the moderator!
Obama has no plan/agenda. He has not given any specifics. I’ve been trying really hard to figure out what his plan is for the next four years and can point to only a tax cut for the middle class and general statements about better education and less dependence on fossil fuel. There is nothing else there. Having said that I learned last night that “folks in America don’t want low paying low-skilled jobs but want high paying high skilled jobs”. I could not believe he said that except to know that he has never worked in the private sector for one day in his life. It was such an insulting thing to say to the Americans who built this country; so elitist.
On Libya, the table is set for Monday night, Obama has some explaining to do as he dug himself a big hole as to the cover-up , the time line and why there was no help or security given to Chris Stevens. The question was why was there no help and Obama never answered the question (along with a few others he never asnswered)..
So happy that Mitt got in his face and has to undo the lies that Obama tries to pass off as facts.
Mitt was exactly right about the drilling permits, they are down 62% for offshore drilling and 50% for on shore. Not even close to what Obama said….”whole bunch of leases”??? What exactly is a whole bunch????

http://dailycaller.com/2012/10/16/obama-touts-fair-pay-for-women-despite-records-showing-women-paid-less-in-his-own-white-house/ ... According to a report published by the Free Beacon in April, the 2011 annual report on White House staff revealed that the median annual salary for female White House employees was 18 percent less than male employees — $60,000 compared to $71,000.
And in 2008, Scripps Howard syndicated columnist Deroy Murdock noted that as in Obama’s U.S. Senate office, women were paid less than men: While the average male staffer brought home $54,397, female staffers averaged $45,152.
Romney detailed his professional history, recruiting women into positions of power during his tenure as governor of Massachusetts. He further pointed out the economic suffering women have endured under Obama, including the loss of 580,000 jobs among women and 3.5 million women in poverty.

When Romney was governor he searched for women to be part of his administration and his Lt. Governor was a women. He is basically a used car salesman who can change his mind any minute depending on what will benefit HIM, not the country. Why is it that none of his sons is in the military? Why is most of his money hidden overseas? Is it because he loves America too much? This guy does not give a damn about America. He just wants money and power for himself. Period. For me this election is also about the character of the man who will be leading our country for the next four years, and it is Governor Romney, hands down. The president showed more emotion and empathy for his fallen friends when he chastised the governor for his remarks regarding President Obama's handling of Libya then he did in the Rose Garden shortly after the terrorist attack. The only time the president shows any empathy or emotion is when it benefits him politically. His display of sadness and anger were designed to blunt the facts of the Libyan issue and make Romney appear to be the person with no feelings or conscience... people are not that shallow, Mr. President

"How the hell is Romney going to pay for his tax cut??"

Let me guess... the same way Obama is going to pay for it? He says he gave cuts all around.

"By making the middle class pay for it or raising the deficit,..."

There ya go. And wait until the bill comes due for Obamacare. Even if BO raises taxes on the 1%, which includes scores of Democrats, it will not be enough to cover the trillion $ deficit, he has. He's been running deficits of a trillion $ a year... borrowing from China to do it. If he confiscated all the wealth from the rich, he could not raise enough money to cover these deficits. He needs a new plan.

"...even republicans don't like him, no one does."

Somebody likes Romney because he's ahead in the polls big time. Why do you think the Democrats are scrambling like nervous cats? Sending busloads of folks from out-of-state to Massachusetts to hold up anti-Romney signs. There are more Independant voters than Republicans and Democrats combined in Massachusetts. They must be the 38% or so who are supporting Romney.

Obama will win Massachusetts by about 20 points if he's lucky... but one point is enough.

And Obama was not handed this country, he was elected for four years.

(The Bush wars, tax cuts and deregulations turned a surplus into a $1 trillion deficit.) President Obama took decisive action to prevent the economic catastrophe. The stock market has doubled, regulations were put in place, auto industry was saved, jobs have been added every month of his presidency, unemployment is declining etc. President Obama is the first to say that there is much more work to do. The last thing we want to do is bring back the policies of the Bush era that got us into this mess in the first place - that is exactly what a vote for Romney will do. To say we need a businessman in the White House is naive. He has been very successful in creating low paying jobs and sending the jobs to low wage countries to maximize profits for himself. His goal is to privatize everything and maximize profits for himself and his cronies. Mitt Romney was severely conservative during the republican primaries to shore up the right wing base now he is trying to flip flop to a more moderate candidate, What does he stand for - who knows? The country is moving in the right direction. OBAMA12!

Liz, the debt has increased in 4 years by 5.4 trillion and what do we have to show for it, failed energy companies by the billions, almost double gas and oil prices, increase in health insurance costs. Do you know what, we the people, have gained from the 5.4 trillion debt increase by this administration? My family has not been helped in any aspect of our lives, financially or otherwise and the country is more divided then ever with the constant class warfare precipitated by this president. The truth is that our country at the end of another 4 years with this president will change America forever and not for the good of the people.

Well I guess in the Republican world - voting for the guy who represents their party no matter how severely flawed is the answer to all of our problems. In my opinion going back to the Bush era policies that got us into this mess in the first place is wrong for the USA. I am an Independent voter and vote for the person who I think will do the best job for our country. The choice is clear for me. Mitt Romney represents the past - outdated policies related to woman, continued tax breaks for the wealthy, outsourcing jobs. President Obama represents the future - equal rights for all citizens, let the tax breaks for those making over $250k expire (we need revenue), incentives for companies to bring jobs back to this country, focus on improving education at all levels. The list goes on. President Obama is an honest decent American and he has worked hard for us. He deserves 4 more years to finish the job he has started. He is is moving us in the right direction. The hateful propaganda that the right wing spews about class warfare and other very unpatriotic words are simply not true. Turn off FAUX news.

The 'Budget' deficit increased every year under bush. Went from a budget surplus to over a trillion dollars over budget per year. The budget leads to the overall deficit. When Obama came into office the 'Budget' deficit was over a trillion per year. It has decreased under Obama and is now under a trillion per year. If we elect Romney he is promising to going back to this type of budget gap with his tax plan and defense spending increases that are not paid for. He cannot explain how to pay for it. He trowing out figures of caping deduction 17k? 35k? whatever, of course the numbers add up. Right.

I'm sorry, but how can you vote for someone who has such little regard for others. Romney's policies towards women are simply insulting to the entire female gender (and I'm a guy). Really, women in binders? Also, the fact that Romney favors families with two parents or guardians is just arrogant. I was the child of a single mother, but I don't feel at a disadvantage at all. I was an undecided voter, but after the last few weeks, I can only imagine voting for Obama.
On a side note, the name calling and radical claims on both sides is getting a little ridiculous. Obama is not a socialist, and Romney is not Satan. The KKK isn't running, and neither are valueless racists. I assume that we're all old enough to vote, so perhaps we should act like it. Just because someone else has differing political opinions does not necessarily make them some moronic anti-government citizen. Let's ease up on the rude comments;they really don't make you sound intellectual or informed.

you know what? Economies come and go but when you give up on rights for women you will never get it back. The economy is coming back and if you are an investor (as Romney is) it has come back better than ever! Obama is not a socialist, I don't care what his father read or didn't read. And by the way, Romney wants women to have access to birth control but he isn't going to make the insurance company cover it...so guess what, no birth control!

DB, President Obama isn't the reason this country is broke, that responsibility falls on all of us. He just isn't the answer.

Alison, Why should the Federal Government pay for birth control? That is an individual responsibility. I have no desire for my tax dollars to go towards an individuals choice. I do believe there are medical reasons that would override this, of course, and in those cases it should be a covered cost.

I also don't want to pay for Big Bird, the Arts, or any other Grant program through the Federal Government. This should be the responsibility of each state. Think about where MA stands in the scheme of employment incomes. We pay out more than we receive from the Fed. Lets decrease Federal involvement and allow the States to handle non essential issues. This would decrease oversight and put a larger portion of each dollar back where it belongs. Our Federal Gov. is to big to survive. Our cost to run this country our out of control.

Why is Mitt Romney's success such an issue? I for one would like to see a successful business man, as opposed to another attorney, running this country. The moderator cutting Romney off 29 times, and Obama only 8 times, was a disgrace to the handling of the debate.

I certainly do not blame President Obama for the current financial state of this country, that falls on congressional oversight, but I also do not think he is the answer. We need change, we need a business man, we need someone that can make tough decisions without worrying about their image of popularity.

Well I do believe Romney was interrupted so many times because he was being rude and disrespectful and tried to bully his way through the debate without actually answering any questions. How does he feel about equal pay for woman? Taxes? The math doesn't add up - are we supposed to trust him? President Obama tried to respect the rules. No one disputes that Romney is a successful businessman. He made a fortune outsourcing jobs to low wage countries - good for him - bad for America. He changes his position on every issue depending on the audience he is facing. Grover Norquist who apparently leads the GOP said all they need is a guy with a pen who can sign their agenda. Guess they found him in Romney.

The audience he is facing is called America and I am ok with him changing his answers to conform with the majority. He is one of the few members of the Republican party, or either party for that matter, that has any proven success working on a bipartisan basis. He may not have been the most popular person here in MA but look at where this state stands in comparison to the rest of the country. We are not bankrupt, we have statewide healthcare, our economy is strong (based on comparison), our unemployment rate is reasonable, and more importantly our underemployed rate remains low.

President Obama has done the best job he could for 4 years and it isn't enough. He spends to much money, that this country doesn't have, and he has not created sustainable jobs. He has created a system that lowers the unemployment rate with projects and programs that are not sustainable. His track record at a short term fix it man is clear. We do need jobs today but we also need jobs tomorrow. What are those that are temporarily employed, or underemployed, going to do when these programs run out. His bail out plan is not sustainable and will bankrupt this country. His socialist approach to healthcare will create massive layoffs throughout the small business sector. Just wait until January when the full effect of Obamacare arrives. I wonder why they scheduled that for after election day?

@Alison... How much do generic birth control pills cost? $3 a month at K-Mart? What responsible young woman who wants to be sexually active would not spent $3 a month to protect herself from the gruesome horrors of an abortion? Frankly, I think all forms of contraception should be free as well as the initial doctor's visit for women to see if they can tolerate the extra shot of hormones.

Romney is in no way against contraception. Private insurances have always paid for the prescriptions in my experience.

Well of course Liz, blame Bush and change the subject as soon as soon as your argument falls apart. What a shock! BTW Bush went to congress to get approval for both the actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both houses voted their approval overwhelmingly by both parties. As for tax cuts, the U.S. had the highest revenues in history in 2007 well after the Bush tax cuts. “We don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem”.

Steve C

Emcee, Your use of the word "Free" is way off basis and is precisely the problem with the healthcare argument. Nothing is free. Someone has to pay for it, you, me, business owners. Lets be clear on what you are saying is that you want the cost covered by insurance, not that it would be free, and that you want this cost distributed to everyone to cover.

I am a homeowner, a father, and a business owner. I have no desire to be mandated to pay for something that is a choice. Once an individual turns 18 they have the legal right to choose, and to vote. Let them choose to pay their own way. Let them choose to get a job, an education, and to be productive member of society.

Considering the way our tax dollars are squandered, giving away contraception services to all who need it would be money well spent. I know it would not be 'free'. My experience has been that birth-control prescriptions are covered by health insurance. Someone paid for the insurance, of course.

You say: "I have no desire to be mandated to pay for something that is a choice."

Technically, all health matters are a choice. For example, I choose to monitor and buy and take blood-pressure meds or else I will be in all kinds of trouble. Naturally, I don't expect you to pay for it, but you do if you contribute to the health insurance pool.

God bless the 18-year olds. I love them, or at least most of them. We hand them the vote, but very few, if any, are able to live without subsidy from their parents or the good will of taxpayers. Remember that the unemployment rate among people this age is very, very high.

Unless, of course, everything you say is tongue-in-cheek.

Were you aware that Jeffrey Immelt, chief executive of GE and the head of Barack Obama's "Jobs Council" in 2011 started moving GE infrastructure to China and laid off 105,000 workers in the US. Why would the president choose a CEO of one of the largest companies, if not the largest, to head his Job's Council when Immelt is outsourcing infrastructure and jobs oversees?

It was part of his management strategy to tell firms, "Hey, you can increase your profits if you send these jobs to a country where you can pay lower wages."

Don't blame Romney for being a shrewd businessman, put the blame where it really belongs, if you must. That would be Congress for allowing this mess. To follow the laws that Congress creates, isn't that what we're all supposed to do? If not, I don't understand what is. The Obama agenda is to create jobs for all his friends in academia. That is where his allegiance lies. The government schools provide a captive audience.

His education agenda is to be sure that every graduating high school senior is capable of doing one of two things. Joining the military or going on to higher education. The immediate choice for most middle class kids today is to be saddled with debt or risk being a casualty of war.

If I had children in high school today, I think I would encourage them to wait it out. Maybe take a couple of courses and work a part time job. What's the rush?

@Wendy...

The cost of food and housing and utilities and taxes has been rising ever since I have been the one paying the bills. Incomes have risen also so it's been somewhat of a washout. However, in the past four years, costs have exploded. Gasoline and heating fuel in 2008 was a buck and a half, give or take. Now it's $3.50 give or take. Price for an apple might have been 25 cents, today it's 75 cents.

You can tap dance around the issues forever and blame Romney for whatever is the blame-du-jour, the reality is we cannot afford another four years of Obama. Obama is literally killing the middle class as well as destroying our society. Crime is up... I've never heard of as many bank robberies and shop lifting and murders over nothing, as has been going on. Everything is eroding.

Romney is a wealthy man and has choices. He doesn't need to take on this thankless job of president. He has nothing to gain by it except perhaps the satisfaction of making/restoring the U.S. to a better place to live in for his grandchildren and everyone elses.

Wendy, there is no one who has outsourced more jobs than our president. Even the head of his "Jobs Council" has moved more jobs from this country than he created. Immelt cancelled an order to Wind Turbine in order to get cheaper parts from China, cutting jobs to that company.
2.4 billion battery production mostly going to foreign firms
8.5 billion to wind farms oversees loss of 10,0000 jobs
880 million tax credits clean energy foreign firms
2.7 billion loan guarantee to Spanish Co. Abenoga
337 million to Arizona solar plant in which the panels were supplied by a Chinese manufacturing company.

President Obama has done little with taxpayers money to create jobs for Americans. The above mentioned stimulus is just the tip of the iceberg. Today the jobless claims surged to 388,000. You can believe that the economy is improving but until the coorate tax rate is lowered and regulations are decreased for companies, encouraging businesses to hire, as Romney advocates, jobs will continue to be sent oversees and we will continue on a downward spiral of further loss of jobs...truth not talking points.

" until the coorate tax rate is lowered and regulations are decreased for companies, encouraging businesses to hire"

Lowering corporate tax rates will not encourage businesses to hire. Increasing DEMAND will. If there is demand for products/services, businesses will hire, screw the regulations. If we give money to the big corporations by cutting their taxes, they can hire all the people they want, but if no one buys the product/service,

And let's look at it this way:
Say a rich guy is so rich and buys a house with 10 bathrooms. Does that have the same effect as 10 people buying houses with 1 bathroom each? No. You migh think to yourself, "Well, 10 toilets have been purchased in both cases, so what's the big deal?" Well, 10 people using 10 toilets creates more of a stimulus on the economy than 1 person using 10 toilets.

"Romney is a wealthy man and has choices. He doesn't need to take on this thankless job of president. He has nothing to gain by it except perhaps the satisfaction of making/restoring the U.S. to a better place to live in for his grandchildren and everyone elses". Romney has one goal and one goal only, to add "President of the United States" to his resume. BTW, you seem to be blaming Obama for the increase in the cost of food, etc. Why aren't you blaming him for the increase in the population of the country also. BTW, the only jobs a President can create are government jobs. They can't create jobs in the private sector, They can, however, improve the
economic environment. But that doesn't mean companies have to hire. So for either to say they will create 12 million new jobs it seems that the draft will be reinstated.

Let me rephrase: to become the first *Mormon" president of the US. It's not that I don't think that is a noble goal, but I don't think we should look at Romney as having only the most noble intentions. He gets something out of this.

Obama is right in what he wants to do with this country and our direction and to deny that is simply just silly. Doing what republicans want to do with our country is what led us to where we are now. Yea more tax cuts for the rich who don't create any jobs, and oil companies who made record profits and continue to do so. How about investing some of that money into education, basically investing in ourselves and our and our childrens future. I am so sick of hearing about the deficit, face it we will always have one whether it's ten dollars or a trillion dollars. The only time we didn't was under a democrat named Clinton, certainly not a republican that's for sure.

With the healthcare bill and the 21 news taxes that go with it, and the 16,000+ IRS tax agents to be hired to "police" the new 21 taxes/healthcare related, there were many little *surprises* tucked into that Obamacare/Pelosi-healthcare bill....so called Affordable Care Act.

Susan, in 2009 the White House women made $.89 for every dollar a man made. In 2011 in the Report of White House Salaries submitted to Congress, there is a $11,000 difference between the female employe salary and the male. The median salary for woman was $60,000 and male $70,000. Why doesn't the White House support the Lilly Ledbetter Law which the president was proud to sign.. Further, what women is not in charge of her health care? It was proposed in the health care bill that mammogram screenings were not necessary every year and not before age 40...concern for women's health and equal pay, I think not.

You don't really understand the law or the issue. The problem that the Lilly Ledbetter act addresses is that women were prevented from suing over pay discrimination by a ridiculous statute of limitations. The larger issue is that men are paid more than women, in too many places in the US, for the *same* work. You can't just average up the men's and women's pay in a workplace. You have to average up the men's and women's pay in the same job.

What pay discrimination legislation can't address is the problem that women traditionally have jobs that are low-paying. We pay a doctor more than we pay a nurse, for example. We pay a CEO more than we do a secretary. That's where affirmative action and "binders full of women" come in, but that's another story....

Just having Limbaugh, Beck, Rove, Norquist, Palin, Bachman and FAUX news on your team should be enough to vote for the other guy but sadly people believe the propaganda they and the teabaggers spew. Obama was taken off guard by Mitt Romney's complete change in his campaign agenda during the first debate. The right wing severely conservative Mitt persona wasn't working so he pivoted to the new Moderate Mitt. When will the real Mitt Romney stand up. President Obama was better prepared to deal with the lies the second time and he won. OBAMA12!

The World Trade Organization barred China on Thursday from imposing duties on certain U.S. steel exports, siding with U.S. President Barack Obama in a dispute with Beijing over a type of steel made in two election battleground states. The case involved duties imposed by China on "grain-oriented electrical steel," which is used in the cores of high-efficiency transformers, electric motors and generators. The steel is made by AK Steel Corp of Ohio and ATI Allegheny Ludlum of Pennsylvania.

These ideologies as you know clash but hey, if Sean Hannity or Rush proclaims it, these low-information people eat it up like candy....no matter how wrong it is. The other thing is now facts are put up for debate. If you point out a fact, the low information voter will dispute a fact no matter how much information is presented. This behavior keeps us in a politically unworkable environment when facts are now moved like the proverbial "goalposts". Even R-Money has said they ignore factcheckers.

Romnesia......can be helped!

http://youtu.be/sNGZil616ug

"We've got to name this condition that he's going through," Obama said, referring to Mitt Romney's attempt to undergo a last-minute transformation from a severe conservative to a severe moderate. "I think it's called Romnesia. That's what it's called. I think that's what he's going through."

"Now," he continued, "I'm not a medical doctor, but i do want to go over the symptoms with you—because i want to make sure nobody else catches it."

And what might those symptoms be? Here's one example: "You know if you say if you're for equal pay, but you can't say if you'll sign a bill for equal pay, you might have Romnesia." And: "If you say you think women should have access to contraceptive care, but you support legislation that would let employers deny contraceptive care, you might have Romnesia." And another: "If you say you you'll protect a woman's right to choose, but you stand up in a primary debate and say you'd be delighted to ban abortion in all cases, then you definitely have Romnesia."

But you don't need to worry, said the President. "If you have Romnesia, here's the good news—Obamacare covers preexisting conditions. We can fix you! We can make you well."

Mr. Lunt,

I work for a small Wall Street firm and remember very vividly how the credit markets ground to a halt in September 2008. As I recall, President Obama took office in January 2009 after being elected in November 2008. So explain to me again how the Bush policies “worked”. Then explain to me why Mitt Romney works so hard to disassociate himself from these “successful” policies.

Richard W. Lunt

The credit markets ground to a halt because of people such as Barney Frank and the whole Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac fiasco. Credit markets also ground to a halt because the banks were lending money to people who and are not credit worthy because they had a minimum wage McDonalds salary, this practice had been going on since the Clinton Administration. During President Bush's Term, the unemployment rate was 5.3 percent. Also during Mr. Bush's term his policies pulled us out of the recession of 2001 and because of his policies, the country managed 6 straight years of uninterrupted economic growth and a record 52 straight months of job creation. Can't say the same for President Obama.

Salt Lake Paper - ENDORSES OBAMA - That's gotta hurt the ROM-BOT!

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/opinion/55019844-82/romney-obama-state-president.html.csp

Excerpt:

In considering which candidate to endorse, The Salt Lake Tribune editorial board had hoped that Romney would exhibit the same talents for organization, pragmatic problem-solving and inspired leadership that he displayed here more than a decade ago. Instead, we have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb. Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney’s domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust.

Therefore, our endorsement must go to the incumbent, a competent leader who, against tough odds, has guided the country through catastrophe and set a course that, while rocky, is pointing toward a brighter day. The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first.

Frank,
President Bush's policies pulled us out of the recession of 2001. Romney should point to the fact that the Bush tax cuts worked and provided us with 6 straight years of uninterrupted economic growth and a record 52 straight months of job creation. The Depression which began in 2007 and 2008 had more to do with the mere fact that Mr. Bush had to compromise with the liberal socialists such as Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi in order to get anyhting done. Had the Congress and Senate been under Republican control during Bush's full 8 years in office, we'd be talking about low unemployment, a balanced budget, and a surplus. I put the blame of the Great Recession/Depression on the liberal democrats in Congress and the Senate from 2007 until now and in the White House from 2009 and current. Another thing to consider, there hasn't been a budget passed in 4 years of the Obama administration, at least under President Bush, there was.

Words like Socialist and Arrogant are used to substitute for what they really feel (for example Arrogant = Uppity) so words that they are afraid to use in public have been subsituted. But we know that the extremely high hate and disrepect is racially motivated because the straw man of Obama as a monster and one who hates this country cannot be true and IS NOT TRUE. But its ok, I want to see the fetal position some of these people will be in when (if all goes well) our President gets another term to finish the job. If there was a chance to reach consensus I would not feel the way I do but the only way to move ahead is to drive around a road block. In this case thats the GOP.

I thank you for your response but bi-partisanship has died more or less. None of these detractors spoke when Bush asked to not "change in midstream" despite all his failures from 9/11 to the stupid war in Iraq. The President has had to clean up a myriad of messes that despite the fantasy of the low information voters and posters here that did not magically start on 1/20/2009. NO time in history has a standing president had to deal with treason-like behavior of the other party who met the same day of the Inaguration and plotted to obstruct ANY and ALL efforts this President would take. The founding fathers designed our government to have ying and yang, push and shove from both parties to reach some consensus. They would look with same and disdain at the current GOP which obstructs every action from judges to budget to any other action needed. Thankfully, some key work was done and things are improviing but would do much better if obstruction would end. But, good always finds a way, and I believe good will come to the President one way or another as he wants to do right by everyone, even those who hate him. That's a sign of a leader I was glad to support and will continue to support. I always had no problem with classic Goldwater republicans....if they were more common in recent years, we could be on a path to success because they still had serious differences but a spirit of cooperation overwrote those differences. Who would have thought that the unity after 9/11 and targeting Afganistan would be tossed aside to win more seats by Bush and the GOP and to attack the wrong country, Iraq. That was more important than safety. I supported the administration through Afghanistan despite my disdain for the stolen election because it was a national crisis. Most of the Dems in office did rollup and support the Bush admin but we see how that ended up. So now, the opposition has grown and metastizied in an opposition at any cost where the actions to hurt the economy. I originally come from one of the reddest parts of the country and I unbelievably now think that dealing with the narrow minds down there was a bit better than up here in the sadly red part of the state I live in now. I think my past experiences made me stronger as I have dealt with all of the silly and terrible things before. Here the quality of "red state" is less suble and way more stubborn, but I do believe in what I fight for so I enjoy the debate here but in normal life I have to do more but I do thank you for being respectful....even if you disagree....its rare but appreciated.

Frankie and Paul, once again I'll splain this, it was NOT the entire economy, it was just banking and real estate, OK? Apple, Exxon, ATT, McD's, Merck, PhilipMorris, Boeing, ect ect ect ect ect ect, were NEVER in trouble. You write 2 TRILLION, (that's $2,000,000,000,000 if you want to see the zero's) of bad RE loans, thank you Barney Frank, and trust me, bad things will happen.
I commend you on either your sense of humor, or state of denile (a river in Egypt) that when college grads are facing 30% to 50% unemployment, depending on who you believe, that things are even remotely better. Unemployment would be close to 17%, if they used the same metrics as the 1930's (ie no 4.4mil on crazy pills, no 11mil on welfare, no 14mil not looking for work and the list goes on and on and on).

BTW Frankie and Paul,
The auto industry always was able to sell cars by the tens of millions, they just never made money, it was their pension liability that doomed them. Ax Frankie, I remember 7 yrs ago having 2 JPMorgan senior VP's telling me GM had to go bankrupt to shed it's cost's. The exact phase they used was GM had "a slow motion bomb inside it".
Just open your minds and see that Barry is the least qualified Pres in the entire HISTORY of the country. He's NEVER employed one person, NEVER wrote a single payroll check, NEVER worked at a single company that made a nickel. On second thought I'm insulting the little girl down the road who made a 5 bucks at the popsicle stand.
You two should do what's best for the country, not who gives you the most free stuff!!!

DB I do agree in general. I don't blame Obama for this mess. No one man has that kind of power. My reasoning behind not supporting him isn't because I am tea party nut job, I just don't think that he can get the job done.

Mitt Romney may have outsourced jobs and I am ok with that. I am also ok with politicians that change tactics. That is called adapting. We need someone who isn't so narrow minded and stubborn. What we need are politicians that can put there party's agenda to the side when bipartisan cooperation is necessary. Scott Brown has voted with his own party 60% of the time and the other 40% he voted to get something accomplished. We need the same with our next President and my hopes are that it will be Mitt Romney.

Between Jan.3, 2007 and Jan.3, 2009 the Congress was controlled by Democrats. Congress holds the purse strings, they are responsible for finances and budgets. They including then Senator Obama spent the SURPLUS... THE DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY... I rest my case.

You know, I think it's kind of interesting that the article points out that way we measure the deficit is changing. If SS and Medicare were included in the federal accounting in 2006, the deficit would have been in the trillions. I wonder if they're counted now. /off to Google some more

Well if you want to live in an oligarchy where the rich get richer by whatever means that is your choice. Romney does have the support of very wealthy people like the Koch brothers (watch Koch brothers exposed) and Adelson (Israel is his passion). Other than not increasing taxes on the rich and privatizing everything so the rich can keep getting richer - I have no idea what Romney stands for but maybe the brilliant Republicans can point that out. Adapting to change is one thing as someone pointed out - flip flopping on a daily basis is another - but I guess he hopes we don't notice. I prefer to live in a democracy where and yes I am quoting President Obama "where we all have a fair chance and we all play by the same rules". Historically we have been a country where we help others in need. Apparently that is a bad thing for some people. Regulations have been restored in an effort to crack down on fraud and abuse of the financial system. If you prefer to deregulate so fraud and corruption can be restored well vote for Romney. If you like war - vote for Romney. If you want your taxes increased to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy - well vote for Romney. Romney represents profits for himself over people. If you want to continue to give oil companies billions in subsidies - vote for Romney. The notion that his business experience will somehow help this country and trickle down is delusional. That's all - off to campaign for OBAMA12!

Businesses are the key to hiring and lowering unemployment. Tax breaks for businesses will create job growth. Obamacare will stunt job growth. I wonder why they chose January 2013 for it to come in to full effect? Businesses, often owned by millionaires, will avoid hiring to offset the added tax and insurance costs. You can thank Obama for that.

Big oil will make the money either way. If you take the tax breaks away they will pass the cost on to the consumer. They have us by the balls and there is nothing we can do about it, but, think of it this way. We, the USA, pays less than half for gas than most other countries. If you want to eliminate tax breaks for oil head to Canada and fill your tank or heat your home, lets see how you feel then.

Millionaires and Billionaires have learned how to work the tax system to maximize profits, that is their job and responsibility to share holders, stop hating on them and realize that a profitable business is good for the economy.

Obama has crushed small businesses over the past 4 years. Hiring is at an all time low. 7.8% unemployment reports are a joke and not mathematically possible. It is a skewed number that is offset by seasonal and underemployed individuals. Talk to me in February and lets see with this countries unemployment rate stands.

There is no FREE health care for all. Someone will pay and what Obamacare has created is a system where the few pay for the many.

"There is no FREE health care for all."

Indeed not. Hence the mandate that everyone, especially the young and relatively healthy, pay into the insurance pool to offset the demands of the aging population and the occasional seriously sick younger person. If the mandate is put on businesses, they will within the year, pass that cost on to consumers. Everything is about the bottom line and it is the middle class who notice the increased prices.

Obamacare is going to be such a boondoggle of trying to get doctors and hospitals to comply with taking on new patients. They have a bottom line, too. A formula that tells them just how many medicare/medicaid patients they can afford to take on and still turn a profit.

Serious challenges ahead and I'm afraid Obama will just throw Obamacare out there and let it sort itself out, whereas Romney might work at getting it right.

Romney 2012 for many reasons.

I'm not agreeing with your point here, but let's treat it as valid. If there is increased demand, because the middle class has more money in their pockets, then wouldn't that offset any tax issues? I can't see millions of orders coming into a company and the company saying "Oops, can't fill these orders. I have too many regulations." Some other company will pop up and make it happen because they see that the demand exists.

I know "going Galt" is some sort of fantasy of the right wing, where the leaders of industry will stop running businesses due to the overregulation and overtaxation by government, but that is a delusion.

I don't hate anyone - that is an emotion reserved for the extremists. I don't understand the wealthy or their need for money. When is enough enough. Healthcare in this country is broken - can it be attributed to greed and excess? Maybe. Is the American Healthcare act or Obamacare/Romneycare the answer - maybe not but it is a start. Under Romney's new plan (he supported Romneycare until it became Obamacare) don't worry if you don't have insurance - just go to the emergency room - the most expensive way to get healthcare - and who absorbs that cost? No one on this planet can convince me that Romney (who has been running for President forever) is the right man to take this country in the right direction. Which Mitt Romney will show up to the debate on Monday - Severely conservative Mitt to appeal to the extemists? Moderate Mitt to appeal to the undecided? Maybe there will be a Liberal Mitt to try to pander to the Democrats. So many personalities - he has the best acting coach money can buy I am sure. See you all after the debate Monday. Go Obama!

@Wendy... "If there is increased demand, because the middle class has more money in their pockets, ..."

That seems to have been the problem, even with gigantic stimulus packages and bail outs and taxpayer investments in places like Solyndra, the middle class worker hasn't seen an abundance of disposable income. After four years of Obama economics we've seen a terrible inflation in the cost of gasoline and heating fuels and food and medical care. It's scary to think of what the next four years will bring because Obama doesn't seem to have a plan other than to go forward with the plan that is barely working.

What you describe would probably work under optimum conditions, but we are not in that place. We need to approach the problem from a different direction with different minds at work. If, after four years, things are not better under Romney, then he gets the boot. But, to me, it's worth the try with someone else.

Wendy you have lost the concept of outsourcing, which is what companies will do when demand rises.

I also don't think redistribution of wealth is a good plan for a government to get out of debt. Increase in growth domestic product is what this country needs most. Upgrades to infrastructure would lower the unemployment rate and stimulate the economy. Investing government funds, which is borrowed from somewhere, in companies like GM is a huge mistake. The funds should have been used for capital improvement projects thus creating jobs, study some history here people. FDR would be disgusted with congress right now. If this country wants to spend money that it does not have it will never get out of debt.

I thought my Obama files comment was funny but then again I am a Republican. For the record I am also a business owner.

See, I was thinking about small businesses there. I was discussing this with a family friend who owns a custom car repair business. She claimed regulations and taxes on small businesses were too much and she couldn't afford to hire new workers. But I told her I thought if she had more business than she could handle, she would certainly hire more workers. She can't exactly outsource; many small businesses can't. And they're the engine, I'm told, that drives the American economy.

I agree with you about investing stimulus money into infrastructure, by the way. I think we have done that a bit. I can't tell you how many road and bridge projects I see going on around here. But there should be more.

In an effort to debunk some misinformation that keeps getting repeated over and over again, I will located post some clear argue-free facts that I hope will kill the misinformaton or at least debunk it once and for all......starting with the false Republican narrative that President Obama should have gotten more done during his first two years in office because he had a super-majority in the Senate. A super-majority is a filibuster-proof 60 or more Senate seats, allowing one party to pass legislation without votes from the other. Don't forget: the President needed a super-majority because of the Republicans' unprecedented use of the filibuster as an obstruction tactic - they've used it more than 400 times so far. That exceeds all congresses in history...even during the turbulent 60's. There actually wasn’t a two year super-majority.
This timeline shows the facts:
President Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009 with just 58 Senators to support hisagenda. He should have had 59, but Republicans contested Al Franken's election in Minnesota and he didn't get seated for seven months. (continued)

(continues here)
The President's cause was helped in April when Pennsylvania's Republican Senator Arlen Specter switched parties. That gave the President 59 votes - still a vote shy of the super majority. One month later, Democratic Senator Byrd of West Virginia was hospitalized and was basically out of commission. So while the President's number on paper was 59 Senators - he was really working with just 58 Senators. Then in July, Minnesota Senator Al Franken was finally sworn in, giving President Obama the magic 60 - but only in theory because, Senator Byrd was still out. In August, Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts died and the number went back down to 59 again until Paul Kirk temporarily filled Kennedy's seat in September. Any pretense of a super-majority ended on February 4, 2010 when Republican Scott Brown was sworn into the seat Senator Kennedy once held. Do you see a two-year super-majority?

Now if you mention the ACA (Obamacare) - It was passed using in the Senate via reconciliation which allows on budget/financial issues to be passed with a simple majority or 50 plus the vice president (VP Biden) - ACA needed reconciliation to pass and even then the president had opposition from several Senators (Lincoln, Lieberman, Nelson, Warner, Landrieu, and a few others) - Even this legislation had a tough time......

So now can we finally kill the false meme on the 2 Year SuperMajority - It is not true and facts now show why.

One more fact to place regarding the deficit - As of Oct 5th, 2012, "The federal government’s fiscal year 2012 has come to a close, and CBO estimates, in the Monthly Budget Review, that the federal budget deficit for the year was about $1.1 trillion, approximately $200 billion lower than the shortfall recorded in 2011. The 2012 deficit was equal to 7.0 percent of gross domestic product, CBO estimates, down from 8.7 percent in 2011, 9.0 percent in 2010, and 10.1 percent in 2009, but greater than in any other year since 1947

Link:
http://www.cbo.gov/publication/43656

The CBO is NON PARTISAN and is used regulary by both parties. The $300 Billion reduction to the $1.4 Trillion budget deficit that Obama inherited, while rather modest, is still an improvement considering the slow steady process of the recovery and the blistering unmoving opposition to other valuable legislation being held up in Congress to stimulate more job creation.

So now we know the deficit and where it is currently - so can we keep that clear going forward?

The middle class doesn't win with $4,300 less income, a dismal 4-year unemployment record, $6 trillion added to the deficit, and reduced itemized deductions (read: higher taxes) for medical expenses, and the other increased taxes that are coming under Obamacare.
Why should immigrants, illegal or legal for that matter, "win" anything if the big O is re-elected ?

I also don't think 4 years is much time to accomplish your goals

Passing the Jobs Act would not have helped this country. It would have created short term underpaid jobs based on unsustainable financial reform. Obama would have looked good for a few years and left yet another mess for a future administration to handle.

I may be a Romney supporter but regardless of who walks away with this election I will support them. They will be our duly elected President and Commander in chief. This country needs to take on a non-partisan approach to government. Forget bi-partisan and stop being so stubborn. This is our democratic process and for better or worse it has placed us at the head of the world. When we wake up on November 7th and step out the door lets do it together. A country divided is a failed country, as with any company, military, or community.

he Jobs Act would have made a big difference in construction jobs, where unemployment is the highest, with the added benefit of starting to meet infrastructure needs. Construction is by its nature project-oriented so I guess you are correct that the jobs would be “short-term” - but your assertion that it wouldn’t work is just that, an assertion. Sorry, not buying it wouldn’t work because you say so. Also not buying your anecdotal evidence that a few of your acquaintances represent some kind of meaningful trend - everybody has friends, whose life experience always seem to somehow dovetail with one’s political philosophy.

Steve, I appreciate your attempt at a civil tone and I appreciate your service and your hard work. Liz if you believe that crap you are spewing you are smoking crack. Did any of the 2% you mention benefit from the Obama administration? Of course they did. Where did all the money from the bail outs go? Where did the money for the election campaigns come from. You know it wasn't the "middle class". I am a member of the middle class and my life isn't any better after the last four years. The President hasn't lived up to the promises he made during his campaign and our economy has seen anemic gains if any at all. Two of my kids graduated from college since he was elected. Gee I seem to remember the president saying he was going to make college more affordable for them. The government assumed their student loans at a miniscule 8% interest. I get to carry one of my kids loan payments while the other I have to assist financially because he lives and works in Boston and can't make enough to survive with a BA in Science. Maybe we should have changed our citizenship to another county and come back illegally so they could get cheap or free tuition. All politicians are in it for their own personal agendas and we are all just pawns in the game. If you believe we are headed in the right direction then step forward the the front of the line and be first to drink the koolaid.

I’m confused. I saw Mitt Romney on national television state that he pushed through full tuition scholarships at state colleges for the top 25% in each high school class. And you couldn’t swing that? Oh, that’s right, he forgot to mention that in Massachusetts tuition equals about 10 PERCENT of tuition and fees (and that’s before room and board - include those and its more like 5% or less, depending on the living arrangement). And while I think it must certainly be fun and exciting to be an illegal immigrant, I’m going to pass on your suggestion that that’s the solution to high college costs. Too bad you didn’t think of that in your own case.

Where did all the money from the bailouts go??/
Wells Fargo and Co.: 25 Billion (yes Billion),
JP Morgan Chase: 25 Billion,
Citi Group 25 Billion,
Morgan Stanley 10 Billion
Goldman Sachs 10 Billion
Bank of America 15 Billion (and they just got sued today for a Billion for creating the whole mess in the first place with fraudulen lending). The list goes on and on.

Why didn't GM get bailed out by private investors?? It was because those banks were getting bailed out themselves. Don't believe the Romney propaganda that GM should have been bailed out by private investment. Everybody was taking government money and nobody was lending.

What I did find is that less than 3% of Americans make over $250k per household per year. That 17% of Americans think that 20% of Americans make over $250k. 8% of MA residents make over $250k. So in general I found no solid information that shows that Americans have any clue what anyone makes and that all of the information on the internet is skewed to the left or the right depending on the sources views. I also found that making money seems to upset the majority of the population. Also found that 12% of the country lives at or below the poverty level and that number is dramatically different when looking at the listings by state.

I get that people want to vote for Romney because he is not President Obama or the economy isn't recovering fast enough or Mitt Romney is a successful businessman. I just don't get what Romney stands for other than he is not President Obama and he will promise the world on Day 1 to get elected. Maybe I have followed the campaigns too closely over the past year and have become mired in details. It is interesting that those at the top who have figured out how to game the system are brilliant while others are considered moochers. Mitt Romney is simply out of touch with reality. He defines the middle class as $250K or above. He says we can all take tax deductions from a bucket of deductions worth $25K or above. People believe what they want to believe but I believe that President Obama is heading in the right direction. He needs to define his vast number of accomplishments and his path to continued success better so we can all understand. Hopefully he will find a way to do that before it is too late. Darren I would have to agree that the middle class appears to be more in line with your numbers. "My" candidate as you state is unfortunately not in the running. As much as I like President Obama I just don't have the confidence that he can get it done, so I am going with Romney. He would not have even been on my list of candidates I would like to see running for office, but that is a conversation for 2016.

I do not believe that the middle class is $50k or below, Liz. " Turn off Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity and FAUX news." all of these media outlets have failed us over the past years with their biased coverage and misinformation. I do not watch them and base my decisions on their information.

I ask on the basis of your statement - Bush certainly didn't reserve re-election after failing on 9/11 and Iraq - so I want to see if you are consistent..but I won't hold my breath.....but i would ask for your answer

I think middle class is way more than simple income. It also has to encompass debt, assets, and lifestyle. I don't see myself being anything other than middle class, but we currently have practically no debt and decent incomes and a mostly paid-off house, and I feel like we have a lot of disposable income and economic security relative to how we used to live. I think what I have is what a lot of people hope the middle class will be like, but instead, so many people who make decent incomes are one crisis away from financial armageddon. I lived that way for the first 15 years of my marriage.

I think you are correct, Wendy. My issue is that government tends to discourage savings and encourage spending. It is the nature of the beast.

I think the term "disposable income" should be put to bed. I have no money to burn.

a lot of people are closer to financial armageddon than they think. Lose a job, have a car accident, get cancer--and life changes in an instant.

I grew up with working class parents (my dad was a carpenter) in a small working-class town. The good thing was the connections between people. There was more of a sense of community and giving back. Most people served on a town board, or taught Sunday School, or served in some way.

Wendy, I agree living on the edge is no way to live. My son and his wife (two children) have never had the chance to get ahead and live one paycheck away from not being able to pay the mortgage, have no health insurance, etc. They live near Raleigh NC where there's a lot of tech work. They are good people and work hard but it's hard for this generation to get and hold onto work.

That's why I support the Affordable Healthcare Act. No one should have to bankrupt themselves to pay for a catastrophic illness. In my work in healthcare I've seen how dysfunctional today's medical care system is. We in the US pay twice as much as first world countries in Europe and our medical outcomes are nowhere near as good as theirs. We in the US can be egotistical and shout 'We're Number 1' but we'd be blinding ourselves to the reality that more can be done with less money.

it doesn't stop at our borders. Other nations took up the sketchy, dangerous loan practices/derivatives/Ponzi schemes of US banks and drove their nations into recession. We need to regulate the US banks and keep this from happening again. Businesses need to adhere to ethical standards and not be run by conmen.

Romney has big lead over Obama among military veterans
A new Gallup poll shows Mitt Romney leading President Obama by 24 points among military veterans, essentially accounting for Obama's 'gender gap' among men.

Hey Babe, Romney has a HUGE lead among vets. Let's talk reality here OK, why would men and women who are swore to protect the country be voting for someone so determined on bankrupting it. That would be counter productive, would it not?

It may be that most military veterans aren't aware that the strategy behind the arms race with the Soviet Union was to force the Soviet economy into bankruptcy through high military spending. It worked.Trouble is, military spending produces fewer jobs than non-military spending and in the long term has a negative impact on any country's economy. There's the conundrum: we're protected from without and collapse from within. I appreciate and respect military veterans but am glad they're not running the economy.

Ok really last comment until the debate tonight. With all due respect to the Veterans of the United States - who I admire and commend for your service, I am concerned that the GOP desire to increase military spending means more war. In my humble opinion - I think this country has seen enough war. President Obama supports ending the wars, bringing our men and women home, and supporting them when they get here. Support is a different form of government spending - I believe - and hopefully everyone can agree that this is money well spent. President Obama has ended the war in Iraq, is winding down the war in Afghanistan (Bush era, Bush unfunded) and brought Osama bin Laden to justice. The Middle East is in turmoil and some would say we need to intervene - I surely don't have the answer but we certainly have our own issues to deal with and it would be great to take the money we have spent on war to grow our own economy. I do not understand those who hate us and why they feel the need to hurt us but I guess that is a reality that must be the most difficult issue for the President of the United States/Commander in chief - to face. I believe that President Obama has been a stoic confident leader. For this reason alone, he has my vote. Haters - find another forum.

If Romney achieved his goal of setting defense spending at 4 percent of GDP by 2017, the difference between his 10-year defense plan and Obama’s current decade-long plan would be $2.03 trillion, according to a study by Todd Harrison, a defense budget analyst at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.

On the other side, David Koch, Larry Ellison, most of the Hedge Fund CEO's and the current AIG CEO - yep out of tune and not just politically just missing the point in life and being aware that good people may not have a networth that matches theirs - Mitt just demonstrates a sense of cluelessness about many things outside being rich - remember the awkward moments during the primary.....Grits, trees being the right height, acting as if he had never seen a washing machine, telling students to just borrow from mom/dad for college, shop around for a doctor....etc.....and of course the 10k bet with Rick Perry - those are just some real life examples...but no I believe its behavior not position.

About Romney's alledged lack of knowledge... Mormons do a lot of mission work, they are not isolated from the general populace, plus one doesn't have to come up through the ranks of poverty to make a good leader. The two are not connected. As things are shaping up, more and more citizens are having respect for Romney and can imagine him as a good leader, at least a potential improvement over the economic stagnation we've been experiencing.

@deb - My god you guys really are idiots......birth control will not be free from the government

Conservatives are IDIOTS - the government is NOT getting in the business of providing free contraceptives:

To get birth control without a co-pay means you have an insurance policy. No one can walk into any pharmacy today and get the pill without a prescription, which in any case first entails a visit to a doctor's office. No one without insurance can walk into a doctor's office to get any kind of contraception. None of these women have "free" birth control now, and they will not later even if they get insurance. (See the National Women's Law Center Guide on what to do if you have questions about your insurance plan and contraception without co-pay.)
Why? Because if you have insurance, you pay for it, either by virtue of your labor or out of your own pocket, or, depending on the situation, both. And under the ACA, it is now mandated that your insurance plan cover certain benefits without a co-pay. This does not make them "free." It means that you are paying for that service as part of your premium. You earned it, you paid for it, it is yours. If you pay for it, you deserve to get it.

Here's why "Janet" is lying about the Illinois Pension Fund.............

http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/president_obama_2011_oge_form_278_certified.pdf

I located this info and pasted it below:

See, Obama has between $50,000 and $100,000 in a defined benefit pension plan from the Illinois General Assembly (PDF). The Illinois General Assembly retirement system has some Sensata Technologies stock. So, uh, everyone look at Obama! He too stands to profit from Sensata—in 11 years when he becomes eligible to collect his pension from two jobs ago, a pension in which he's one of hundreds of participants in a $60 million fund (PDF). The Romney campaign, by the way, is billing this as Obama's "personal pension fund."

Romney has $8 million in the Bain funds that control Sensata, and he's able to do what he likes with the Sensata stock he holds, having transferred $700,000 of it to one of his foundations—in the process, reaping more money in tax deductions than Barack Obama's entire Illinois state pension is worth.

Romney also gets a tax break on Sensata

you will get NO traction in attacking Obama on the killings in Libya. It's a dry well. Romney would be like Bush II, letting the same neocons (Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld) take us into new wars. Te rightwing narrative keeps screaming about Obama's
mistakes in Libya, but there were no mistakes. And by the way, Republicans voted down money for better security of our embassies abroad.

At least Romney's flexible. BO is going 'forward' with the same old ideas that haven't worked in the past four years. When he's done with us, there will be an additional $4 trillion in debt, and we will distributing our wealth in the direction of the UN who may or may not have control of the internet. The promise to the Ukranian Medvedyev... what was that all about? BO is a socialist president with a socialist agenda. He just needs to dupe and lie his way there.

there was no "mistakes: of the magnitude the Right makes this out to be. Obama took responsibility for the deaths which was presidential of him. The Rightwing puppet masters (Rove and Co. ) are looking for a smoking gun. But there is none because Obama is steady and cautious.
The right is desperate to find some way to win but no, Romney, in the last debate, was "all over the map" and I'm suffering whiplash at his sudden jolt to the middle.
Romney is no moderate and just pretended to be one when he was Gov. Though he sounded like one during the debate, and seemed to be channeling George McGovern for a bit there.
I've said it before: Romney doesn't know who he is so he will say anything for a cheap shot (get rid of Big Bird/PBS, reinstitute the global gag rule). And so will many who post here.

Barry knew, or ought to have known, about the involvement of al Qaeda and may have seen the attack unfold live. In speeches the next day, he certainly suggested that he understood what had happened, referencing acts of terror in his Rose Garden remarks and then more explicitly calling the raid “terror” in a campaign speech in Las Vegas that night. But next day he changed his story to Youtube video

Gretchen, what "magnitude" would the mistakes have to be to make the president culpable for the death of four Americans. The day of the attack was Sept. 11, yet no increased security. The ambassador had warned weeks before that he was very concerned about the resurgence of al Qaeda in that area and yet no increased security. The Red Cross left due to previous attack, yet no increased security. During the attack which lasted 6 hours, no air support was moved to the area, yet the state department was watching in real time. Even the shelter location was under mortar attack. The president blamed the attack on a film for many days after the attack. The president was patronizing the Libyans by limiting the security for our ambassador. He placed more value on pleasing the Libyan government than protecting our ambassador.

The president knew this was a terrorist attack in real time. Why is it that this president has so much difficulty calling attacks by radical Islamists terrorist attacks?

It's our work as we get older. Keep hope alive. Live in the hope of a better future for all life on earth, not just humans, but keep it just to humans if you like. Are we to be so fiscally conservative that we are scrimy, skinflint, and hold onto every cent and not invest it in a rising generation.

I am going to break this down a bit so that the hardcore Democrats can understand it better. Obamacare is going to cost this country tens of thousands of jobs. As a small business owner, which I am, if we hire more than 11 people we are mandated to provide health insurance, therefore, we have let enough go to remain under this threshold. There are over 5mm companies in the US with less than 10 employees and another 600k+ with over 10 but less than 20. They will let people go to keep under the threshold. Even if each company releases 1 person we are looking at 5 million new unemployed people in this country or roughly 2% rise in unemployment.

Affordable healthcare for all is a great concept and I look forward to the day that it becomes a reality but at this time it is not affordable to all on a Federal level. It should be handled by each state and the guidelines set forth to fit the states needs, as we do here in MA.

President Obama is not the devil and he has had some great ideas. What he lacks is the experience and knowledge to accomplish these goals. He manipulates the media, lies to the American people, all while his other hand is in the coffers of big companies. Just look at his personal holdings and investments over the past 10 years.

Really? Could we have some more information to verify that this is true? I mean, you can say it, but for all we know, you could be lying to scare people. I know people who are unemployed, but I don't know of anyone who was let go so that the employer wouldn't have to pay health insurance.

The cost of the health coverage for a small company would be mainly offset with tax breaks. The issue is that using working capital to fund this throughout the year is detrimental to the structure of the company, which is required to cover at least 60% of the cost. There is actually a much more complex formula but I am not going to get in to that on here as it is hard to understand and I for one am no expert on the coverage parameters.

I am certain that no one was let go based solely on the pretense of avoiding healthcare costs. It is the overall costs to operate a business that is driving the lay offs. Healthcare, increased liability and workers comp, bank fees for lending; which has all but dried up for some industries.

Our sales within the construction renovation and repair industry, residential housing sector, is less than half of what it was just 2 years ago. If a homeowner has no equity the industry takes a major cut back.

Commercial work seems to be booming and has kept diversified companies moving forward but it has been fairly difficult to find finding for large scale projects. As developers we have seen the lenders tighten there lending guidelines which has either delayed or canceled upcoming projects.

"I am certain that no one was let go based solely on the pretense of avoiding healthcare costs. It is the overall costs to operate a business that is driving the lay offs."

OK, but that's different from what you originally said. I would hope that the flip side of addressing the health insurance issue is more cash in the pockets of the middle class so that they can afford to spend more money on things like your services.

See, that's the fine line here. You have to balance between businesses, which want to increase profits, which can be done by shedding "unnecessary" jobs and taxes etc., and customers, who need the jobs and need the services provided by taxes in order to be able to afford the products of the businesses. America has been most successful when it has struck a balance, and it's lack of success in the last decade has been because the pendulum has swung too much in the favor of businesses. (I suppose one could argue, if one liked, that the pendulum swung too much in favor of the customers/people in the 1970s, i.e., post-LBJ's Great Society programs.)

This is an example of how Republicans mislead the public. You are implying that Obama will force small business to pay 100% of employees health insurance or let people go. The small business practice of keeping employee number under 10 or keeping hours per week under 37.5 so as not to have to over health insurance goes back way farther than Obama. So cut the crap.

Steve C

9:50 am on Thursday, October 25, 2012

Paul, what do you mean cut the crap? It does go back further but only under Obamacare is it now mandatory to offer health coverage, even if some of the employees opt out. No one implied that the business would have to pay 100%, you are the only one that mentioned that, and the cost to employers is real. It is not a Republican made up figure.

My point is that the Federal government should not be in the healthcare business, other than the VA. It should be left to the states to handle. The cost of oversight is crushing the cost of this healthcare. My comments are not directed specifically at Obama but at the entire Democratic party.

The middle class will once again pay for this burden. Either out of their paycheck or by loss of their job.

For businesses with over 50. It won't be cheap. The penalty starts at $40,000, and increases with the size of the firm's workforce by $2,000 for each additional worker past 50. And it won't be enough to provide just any insurance, either. The plan must cover at least 60% of health care expenses, and insurance has to cost the employee less than 9.5% of his or her family's salary. If coverage is deemed substandard by those measures, the company is hit with an even higher penalty of $3,000 per employee

Small Business Exemption: Obama’s plan exempts small businesses from the requirement to provide health care benefits or contribute to the costs of the national plan.
There have been no guidelines presented yet as to what constitutes a “small business.” However, if the guidelines applied by the Small Business Administration were used, the definition of “small business” is still vague (and has been redefined many times over the past ten years):

“The Small Business Act states that a small business concern is "one that is independently owned and operated and which is not dominant in its field of operation." The law also states that in determining what constitutes a small business, the definition will vary from industry to industry to reflect industry differences accurately. SBA's Small Business Size Regulations implement the Small Business Act's mandate to SBA. SBA has also established a table of size standards, matched to North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industries.”
Small Business Health Tax Credit: Small business owners would receive a new “Small Business Health Tax Credit” in order to help reduce the costs incurred by small businesses who offer health care benefits. This incentive would be in the form of a refundable tax credit of up to 50 percent on premiums paid by small businesses on behalf of their employees.

Paul, in part you are correct. They do offset with a tax break for most of the costs. The issue seems to be working capital being used for these items and then waiting for year end tax breaks. Many of us in the small business world don't have much additional working capital these days and the banks have tightened up on lending.

Paul, thanks again for the info provided. I just want to clarify that my company, or any that I know of, has never let anyone go based on healthcare costs alone. My focus was on the ever increasing cost of company overhead and employee costs. Healthcare is a great concern not so much for today but starting in 2014. It is my firm belief that qualified physicians will walk away from hospitals and open private practices leaving us with less than the best care. It will come at a great expense to the hospitals which in turn will have to raise costs. The percentage that is covered under Obamacare will remain the same but the cost will rise never the less.

At a meeting with the “Moms For Mitt” group yesterday outside Philadelphia, PA, Ann Romney was asked her opinion on Lilly Ledbetter and equal pay for equal work regarding women’s employment. Without hesitation she responded with another question that seemed to shock even the most staunch conservatives in the room.

“Why should women be paid equal to men? Men have been in the working world a lot longer and deserve to be paid at a higher rate. Heck, I’m a working mom and I’m not paid a dime. I depend on my husband to provide for me and my family, as should most women… and if a woman does work, she should be happy just to be out there in the working world and quit complaining that she’s not making as much as her male counterparts. I mean really, all this wanting to be equal nonsense is going to be detrimental to the future of women everywhere. Who’s going to want to hire a woman, or for that matter, even marry a woman who thinks she is the same, if not better than a man at any job. It’s almost laughable. C’mon now ladies, are you with me on this?”

That's a lie Paul and you should take it down...And that lie has been circulating since Aug so for you to frame it as occurring yesterday is quite disgusting and shows how low you will stoop to spread such lies.

Paul you should be ashamed of quoting this outright LIE. Check your facts and stop using FB as a political source. Most of your posts have been informative, if not agreeable, but to post something as shameful as this disgusts me.
Here is a link you should read before believing this crap

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/mittromney/ss/Ann-Romney-On-Womens-Equality.htm

Ann Romney is a proud and happy housewife, and there is no issue with that, she also supports a solid family life, strong parenting, and old fashioned views of a marriage. This does not make her a bad person but a person of conviction. She is a supporter of women and of families.

thanks for the quote, Paul. I'm sharing it widely. Women like Ann Romney make life harder for all women. I have to laugh when she "depend(s)" on her husband for support. Republicans are so against 'takers' and those who "sponge of the system" but she's sponging off the patriarchal system that puts men as head of the household.
Ann/Mitt are SO out of tough with real women's lives. "Real" women have to work.

Real families need two wage earners. Only the elites like Ann/Romney can spend their days as Ann does (usually) riding one of her dressage horses and planning to go to the Olympics. And hitting the US up for a $77,000. tax break for the horse!!!

Break the cycle of dependency!! Vote Obama! So "real women" can get equal pay for equal work. Where 'real women' can get birth control and even choose to have an abortion if they need one. Real women don't let men or husbands force them into involuntary servitude. Or in Ann's case, servitude.

Don't take this seriously please! It came from "News that's almost reliable". Point is that even with sites listed in this thread, a lot is bullish*t but people still believe what they read or hear without question. Unfortunately even if one does question it is difficult to get an honest answer! No, I don't believe that "LIE".

Paul, you're dealing with zealots who wouldn't know satire if it walked up to them, shook their hand and said "hello, I'm Satire, nice to meet you." These are the same people who click on pop-up ads and believe that they can make $1,768 a week working part-time at home. They actually thought that it was plausible that you thought that Ann Romney ever uttered the phrase "C’mon now ladies, are you with me on this?” Most days I simply weep for America, today I will wail and flay myself while dreaming of a non-idiotic future.

Avon, those of us responding are not Zealots. What we responded to was someone posting political cannon fodder that carries no fact on a discussion thread regarding the candidacy for our next President. These types of postings are misleading and should not be placed on sites like this. For that matter I don't know Paul or what it is possible for him to think, or what you think for that matter. Maybe you are just a left wing democrat that follows your parties commands like a robot.

Anyone that believes you can make $1768 a week working from home filling out computer adds probably isn't reading this thread anyways. They would be to busy filling out adds or possibly being a secret shopper.

Avon, you are a fool of a person. Why would I slink away from you, or anyone, that posts absurd comments on this discussion board. What I find is that people such as yourself are of no use to this discussion, the election process, and probably society.

Why don't you slink away and go back to your extreme couponing and leave the decision making process to those of us that have a stake in the outcome?

The biggest concern that I have seen, based on the Romney campaign, would be that President Obama is an odds on favorite to win re-election ranging anywhere from 62%-71% favorite. Forget the polls that come out as they are biased to the left or right. Bookies know how to make money and set odds, they have done it correctly for 15 of the last 16 elections.

This is bad news for the Romney campaign with only 2 weeks to go. If President Obama blows anything up in the middle east over the next two weeks this race will be a lock, and yes I do think he is capable of this. All he needs to do to secure the presidency is find the group responsible for the consulate attack and take them out. This would all but assure a victory.

On the flip side, if he continues to flounder regarding the lies surrounding this then he is going to continue to loose credibility.

Either way this may boil down to which candidate does or doesn't say or do anything to off the wall over the next 2 weeks.

Steve - I don't agree with the lies but i know you will respect if not agree with his re-election - If the president hollds on to the ketrry states 252 + Ohio => its a win, the rest of the states would start adding up the mandate and help down ticket - I think we need the President to keep it going - I believe things will continue to improve

As people can see from my other posts I tend to lean pretty heavy Democratic but my patience around Benghazi (spelling?) is getting really thin. I want an explanation why the people in the consulate died when the military had resources in the area to help out. The benefit of the doubt for Obama was cancelled out by the whole video scam. It is time for him to put all the cards on the table and explain what happened. That is real leadership, but I guess the truth has to take a backseat to the election.
The only reason I am still considering Obama is because I believe Romney only cares about the top tax bracket and the rest of the country would be worse off in 4 years. I really don't like the choices.

I thought this thread is a discussion. Avon, surely some people on here border on being a zealot. I sense more just have blinders on, focusing on bits of information and not the whole story. In either case it amazes me how quickly an intelligent conversation, debate if you will, turns to ugly name calling and anger. That reflects a different issue about an individual. Misplaced or projected anger as seen right in this thread is an indication of a personal problem unrelated to the actual topic that festers within an individual. I am not talking about any one individual, just a general statement.

Most people do struggle with math above the 7th grade level. How often does the average person do algebra or calculus on a daily basis. People don't even do basic math, leaving those calculations to a calculator. I don't believe there is any math higher than basic in the Healthcare bill.

Janet Sroczynski

I do not think it's the math in the Healthcare Bill that is bothering people, it's the Mandate, aka..."the Tax" that is bothering people. The forcing of the Mandate, the Tax, upon people.......that is the problem. Constitutional vs. Unconstitutional argument before the Supreme Court, Justice Roberts.

If Massachusetts has for instance:

http://www.mahealthconnector.org

It allows people to compare plans. That's not the part that bothers people. It's the forced Mandate/Forced Tax, from the Obama administration that bothers people.

Really, who has a problem with chocolate milk in the schools? Apparently the far left leaning liberal democrats do. So what did they do, they got together with Harvard University to do their BMI-Body Mass Index studies, and then tied it into the Healthcare Bill.

All this from an accidental president who smokes pot and prefers the hard liquors? So much for leading by example. Can't do 7th grade math, and he admits it.

Romney/Ryan 2012.

First off, I don't believe much that comes out of the mouths of politicians, they speak to the crowd they stand i front of. Media bias, both sides is sickening. I have satelitte radio and listen to BOTH sides when I drive. The HATE, the LIES coming from the mouths of these "entertainers" is beyond belief. What I see more of, and offers less credibility, is the 4 letter language spewed from the Left (not that the right doesn't), especially one female "host". As of now, I'm leaning towards not voting because I have no real confidence in any candidate to do a job for the benefit of Main Street America. You know,,,,you or I!!! Gridlock will continue, may even get worse depending on the out come. Politicians will thrive while you and I suffer. Nothing will really change. Spending what they don't have will continue as will future Social programs, that we can't sustain, that remain unfunded. Every clown in office MUST be removed and we need to start fresh....Won't happen though.

Government spending under Obama is at a 60 year low. Lower that when Eisenhower was President. Stock market is up, housing starts are up, foreclosures are down, unemployment is down, auto industry is up. Sure we're moving forward slowly, but we're moving forward. I admit that all members of congress up for reelection should be replaced. THAT"S where the problem "lies". Where else can one get paid so well and do so little??

Paul, your statement is incorrect. Goverment spending under Obama is, of course, the highest of any country in the history of the world, with a deficit of $3.6 Trillion. You most likely meant the the "increase" in spending (1.4%) is at a 60 year low, which is suprisingly true. I agree with your Congress comments, except for Scott Brown.
