Personal Agendas Cloud Selectmen Decisions, Candidate Brady Says
Michael Brady left Seekonk's top board in 2011. He wants to return.
Former Seekonk Selectman Michael Brady said he had to contemplate for some time whether he wanted to return to his old job because he does not believe people should spend too many years at a political post. What finally made him decide he needed to make a bid for a return was observing what he called disrespectful behavior by Board of Selectmen Chair Francis Cavaco at a meeting last month.
The meeting that Brady called "the final straw" involved a discussion about whether Public Works Superintendent Bob Lamoureux should get a new contract. What bothered Brady were Cavaco's comments directed at Lamoureux and former Selectwoman Carol Bragg.
"When you are in a position of authority, you need to balance that power with discretion," Brady said. "I don't like to see when people in power don't know how to balance that power."
He continued, "What [Cavaco] said at that meeting was inappropriate and seemed very personal."
Brady is one of four people who have pulled papers to run in the April election for Cavaco's seat. Cavaco has also pulled papers and returned them. Paul Buckley and Michael DelRosso are the other potential candidates. Those two, Brady and anybody else who pulls papers have until Feb. 11 to return them to Town Hall. Brady and Buckley told Patch they intend to run.
Brady served two terms on the board of selectmen from 2005 to 2011, and declined to run for a third term. He currently serves on the finance committee, but will step down during the campaign, which he said the town charter requires. Brady plans to return to the finance committee if he loses the selectmen race.
The former selectman said his frustration with the current board began in 2011 when it appointed two selectmen to the board of health, an example to Brady of local leaders extending their power too far.
In June 2012, former Selectman Bill Rice attempted to put an end to this perceived power grab by putting an article before town meeting that would prohibit selectmen from serving on other boards. It passed unanimously.
Selectman Bob McClintock did not resign from the board of health following town meeting's decision (Cavaco, the other selectman appointed to the board of health, had resigned earlier), as he waited for the attorney general to determine if the article was legal. The attorney general issued a decision in September that the article was not legal. Brady said that was not the point, and McClintock should have resigned anyhow because the residents had spoken.
"It seems some people on the board of selectmen have an agenda to do what they want, regardless of what the residents want," Brady said. "You're supposed to be there looking out for the public and not making decisions based on personal axes you have to grind."
He said there have been various decisions made by certain board members that have been based more on emotion and personal agendas than on benefitting the community.
"If you're happy with the way things are going, you can vote for Mr. Buckley or Mr. Cavaco," Brady said. "If you want the town to go in a different direction with somebody more respectful, more reserved and who makes decisions based on facts and evidence, not on personal agendas, then vote for me."

Geez! Seems like controvers ywith the BOS group in Seekonk has been going on for years! Maybe forever! I grew up in Seekonk, went to Aiken School - the old wood building, Jr high and then DR...before Seekonk had a HS!
So, all through those years there has been too much 'in fighting' ! I'm guessing, assuming, psychologically speaking, that everyone has a personal agenda, to some degree. that includes you and I as well as board members. They need to direct their agendas toward the entire town, making it better for the majority.
Some, like that Mr. M in Rehoboth, act more like Mayor Daley, 'the elder', of Chicago fame! Seekonk is a small town, it doesn't 'squat' to the rest of the country or the world! It's just Seekonk and a bedroom ccommunity to neighboring Providence (it used to be considered that). All that infighting, back stabbing etc is a huge waste of time.
Another case for some 'cowboy Justice'? they stir up too much stuff.Run them outta town! Get on your horse and don't come back!!!

We may be 'just a bedroom community' but we do all pay taxes and have a right to good government, just as you citizens of the overwhelmingly important city of Attleboro.

Emcee - I still consider myself a citizen of Seekonk! My mother still lives in Seekonk in the 'family homestead'! You took my statements in the wrong direction!

You have my vote, Mike. Of the four potential candidates, you are the most qualified, and that includes Mr. Cavaco. Be nice to have some common sense and even dignity back on the board.

Does anyone know what party Mr. Brady is in?

Why is that relevant in a local, non-partisan election?

Probably an Independent. At any rate, he often touts himself as fiscally conservative, and I think he is. Might be a good guy to have since the price tags on the Banna station, etc. seem to being going up, as we speak.
I listen to his and Richardson's "Point of View" show on local-access TV, do you?

Jonathan, I don't know Mr. Brady, so if he's a Republican or a Democrat that would tell me if he's liberal or conservative. Not that it would sway me at Seekonk's only voting location, but it could.

As for the one polling place, I hear ya. Unless there is some big game changer, I'm not even so sure I will bother voting.

I checked with Jan Parker. Mike Brady is unenrolled -- in other words, an independent. Seekonk town elections are non-partisan rather than races between political parties. In my experience, Mike is a fiscal conservative but without ideology. He certainly is the best qualified candidate, with experience with finances both on the BOS and as chair of the Finance Committee as well as with contract negotiations for the BOS.

That's great. I just would have liked to see him use the political capital he has amassed to help elect the most worthy of the new batch of candidates and then mentor that person. Maybe he made the offer and it was declined? Or maybe he just doesn't think any of the other candidates are worth the time of day?

Thanks for doing the research Carol. The reason I questioned Paul on the relevancy of Mr. Brady's political party membership is because as an observer of community politics for many years in many places throughout the country, I have noticed a person's political party often gives little to no insight on stands the person will take on local issues. What we assume to be a person’s beliefs because of his/her political affiliation is more often than not correct when it comes to national issues, but often not accurate when it comes to local issues.

Jonathan I agree. Mr. Rice was (is) a liberal Democrat. I may disagree with the bigger politics but I think he did a good job as Selectman. No one agrees with all the Selectmen all the time. I'm curious though, is someones political affiliation public record? I can understand if someone is running for public office, some people may want to know. I don't mean the question to be confrontational, I'm just curious.

Hi Amy. It is public record as is whether somebody voted. The only thing that is not public record is who you vote for.

Mr Brady states that one reason he is running is the way the current chairman treated Mr Lamoureux. Mr Brady sure does have short memory, he and his sidekick Mr Richardson tried to do the same thing to another Dept head 3 years ago. His sidekick had a beef with this dept head because of a relative got diciplined by that dept head. That didn't work. I hope everybody joins me and votes for Mr. Buckley, a lifelong resident.

Who was the Dept. head? Not to say it didn't happen, but I can't seem to recall who. Brady is not usually insulting and confrontational, and I've never found him to be a bully. Now, if Bob Richardson had a problem with someone, that's a whole different kettle of fish. That's Richardson not Brady.
Considering that we have three major projects in the works that seem to be stalled for a number of reasons: animal shelter, senior center, Banna station, I think we need someone who can step into the job without on-the-job training. Brady is the best qualified right now. Whatever Richardson (and Brady by association) did three years ago, I don't care.
The sensible vote is for Mike Brady.

I know the situation well. It was about the Fire Chief. There was an outcry. Some of us, myself included, did some rather intense behind the scenes work during the week following the initial vote, and both Mike Brady and Bob Richardson changed their votes. That takes a certain amount of courage. I recall feeling concerned that the public at the next meeting might get out of control with anger, either for their previous votes or heckling them for "caving in" to public pressure and recorded "Amazing Grace" to play outside the BOS meeting room as people went in. "Amazing Grace," of course, is the tune that's played for fallen firefighters. Michael Carroll, then the Town Administrator, said the music could be heard where he and the Selectmen were sitting and said, "I guess I know who did that." Similar behind-the-scenes negotiations have not been successful on Bob Lamoureux's behalf. There's a huge difference there -- whether a Selectman is willing to listen to cogent arguments and change his position, or not. We need Selectmen who will listen deeply, reflect, and be open to changing their positions. We also need civility.

My belief, and as Jonathan has stated, in local politics party affiliation should not necessarily play a part in local elections. You really have to vote for the person who will work hard for the best of the town and it's citizens.
Political parties need to 'take a back seat' or actually get off the bus!

The 2013 selectmen race will definitely be interesting. Will folks come out to support a retread, a controversial incumbent, a Republican with town government experience, or one or more political newcomers? Have I missed anyone?

@Carol... thank you for making the explanation known.
I faintly remember the incident/drama with Fire Chief Jack, but somehow missed the 'Amazing Grace' meeting. What a clever idea, incidentally.

@Steve... "You took my statements in the wrong direction!"
Oops. Sorry about that. Sometimes my feathers get all ruffled up for no good reason. Seekonk is a good little town. Not too corrupt. Reasonably safe. People are decent. Etc., etc., etc.. But, occasionally there is a maverick or two who need squaring away with. 'Run outta town!' as you put it, but in this case, run outta office.

Not to sound like a broken record (I know I do but please bear with me), but I'd still like to know the reason why 2 polling places won't work! It's just no. No reason given and we know it's not the money. I'm also looking forward to some debates or some type of forum with all the candidates. I haven't decided as yet, but anyone will be a refreshing change.

Team Parker says one polling location, so that's the way it is period. If you don't like it, don't vote or move to Attleboro or Rehoboth. I'm sure they will still have everyone check in by precinct for no reason other than "that's the way we always do it".

My impression was the Mike Brady that was first elected almost 10 years ago was not the same same Mike Brady that left office. Which I guess is to be expected. I never really felt I knew where he stood on any issue and lacked consistency?
That said I wouldn't be against voting for him, but I prefer new blood. If faced with a new and even slightly less experienced candidate I will probably cast my vote in that direction.
