The local YMCA will offer free programs and special activities this week.
The Newman YMCA is celebrating National Family Week with a variety of free programs and special activities for families this week.
There will be a week-long open house for families to give them an idea of the things the Newman YMCA can offer. This week will feature family swim from Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Sunday.
The YMCA will offer gym time for families to play basketball together as well as ping-pong and Wii Fit tournaments throughout the week.
Other programs include a family Zumba, a dance fitness program, class on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and the Newman YMCA’s 4th Annual Turkey Run 5K and 10K, which will feature prizes and free t-shirts for the first 200 runners to register.
The YMCA also has suggested activities for families to take part in this week, such as scheduling a family day to go to a park or a concert together or have a “no electronics day” to spend time together reading or playing board games.
National Family Week was first recognized in the United States in 1987. The week is sponsored by the Alliance for Children and Families and YMCAs throughout the country participate.
