Massage Not Only Calming for Mommies, But Babies Too!
Wish I knew about this class when my baby was colicky.
Being a mom of two boys I definitely would have benefited from a class on how to calm a colicky baby. My older son Jacob was colic and I remember many days and nights of screaming. As a new mom it was overwhelming and I just wanted to soothe him. I didn’t find out until he was a year that he had a milk allergy, but that is what the blood work showed. Luckily, it was not significant enough where I had to stop his milk, but as a newborn it made him colicky.
There's a class being offered at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro on how to sooth a colicky baby. Anyone in Attleboro and surrounding communities can attend the infant massage class. It's being offered Saturday, Aug. 27.
According to Instructor Jean Stringham the class will teach parents all about calming an infant and educate parents on sleep patterns, methods of relaxing, gas, colic, constipation and strengthening and toning muscles.
Stringham has been teaching the massage class at Sturdy for 12 years and she is a member of International Association of Infant Massage. She started teaching the class after a certified massage therapist spoke at a childbirth class. Next thing she knew papers came across her desk and she's been teaching the class ever since.
Not only could I have used this class to work through my first child's colic, but I could also have used it for my second child who was a preemie.
Having a newborn is a huge life change for anyone and as a parent you look for ways to bond. This is also a perfect time for a dad to get some bonding time through massage. It may seem to them that mom gets all the time, especially if she's nursing, so it’s a nice change for dad to be able to do something.
The class is a two-hour class where parents of new babies are encouraged to come and get information and bond with their new baby. A 10-minute video will be played and oils will be used on the infants. Parents will get lots of practice on the baby!
So new moms, grab your partner and baby and take advantage of this great opportunity. I am sure after you take this class you will feel that much closer to your baby. I know you probably hear this over and over but they do grow up quickly so every moment with them should be cherished. I know if I had a newborn I most certainly would take this class.
The class size is limited so moms and dads are encouraged to call the Nursing Administration to register by August 22.
