Furtado Pulls Papers for School Committee Run

The Ward 4 school committee representative would be seeking a third term.

It was a quiet Wednesday in the Election's Department office at Attleboro City Hall. While 10 people pulled papers Tuesday to begin possible campaigns for various city offices, Ward 4 school committee representative Brenda Furtado was the only person Wednesday to take the first step toward becoming an official candidate.

Furtado was first elected to the school committee in 2009, when she ousted then-Ward 4 incumbent Jackie Romaniecki. She won a battle of incumbents two years ago against Helen Johnson, who had previously served as an at-large representative and decided to contest the Ward 4 race to prevent Furtado from running unopposed.

At-large incumbent David Murphy is the only other person who has pulled papers for the school committee race.

Furtado and Murphy have until the end of July to return their papers with the required number of signatures from Attleboro residents.

The preliminary election (if needed) will take place Sept. 17. The regular election will take place Nov. 5.

I sure hope we get another candidate to run in ward 4. They can count on my support. We need someone other than "Brenda for her agenda" to competently represent us on the school committee.

Thank you for running again Brenda. You have represented all the students in Attleboro, not just your ward. Your honesty and integrity are appreciated. You do not just accept things you ask questions, you do your homework and work hard. You do not have set agendas like the Pia supporters, you are there for the children. I hope people again realize that the members like Murphy, Oneill, Larson and Zito are just "yes" men (and woman) to the Administration and do not put the childrens education first. We elect school committee members to be our voice, the voice of the public, not to be the voice of the administration. You have worked collaboratively and professionally with all parties, yet you do not backdown when you now what is right. We need more like you the committee and not the "rubber stampers" that do not think about the children, teachers or parents. Keep up the good work.

There is very little accuracy in this post - Furtado does have a "agenda" and has ruined the purpose of the committee - It's not Survivor - kids are the concern and despite all the grandstanding, Furtado has not demonstrated that she deserves another term, FIRE her

Well said, j fernandes! I agree. The phenomenon of negativity toward elected representatives that do their own thinking is unfortunate, but "goes with the territory". I'm confident that Brenda is not dismayed by such, however.

So Jerry, since you and Fernandes are aligned in your thinking. You agree with labeling Mr Murphy a "yes" man...BUT I know you will not deny the amount of negativity tossed his way over the last year plus....."negativity" according to you is the result of "doing their own thinking".. so which one is it? Yes man or a person confident enough to do his own thinking???? Pretty hypocritical....

I wouldn't "label" Murphy "a yes man", but there is a fair amount of evidence suggesting it. Murphy's a dignified man; I have no problem with him. You,
on the other hand, have earned some . . . disappointment. Then again,
maybe you're perfect. I'm not, and never claimed to be. The whole thing
should be about issues, not people. But included under the category of
"issues" is noticing any given representative's voting patterns while
serving. Why don't you run for office, "JD" ? It's "civic contribution".

Jerry,
Read fernades's post, then read your response. Then read your response to me. You contradict yourself multiple times. Also, why wouldn't Fernandes's post warrant a similar response from you if you truly feel its about the issues. Very selective. BTW, why does a citizen need to run for office to have an opinion? Trust me Jerry, voting records, behavior and attendance (or lack of) will be noticed in the voting booths this year.

OK; IF I was self-contradictory, I plead guilty. The jury is still out.

The curious thing about your writing, JD, is that your whole modus operandi is to tear down someone else. I have not read anything constructive from you. And, no, you don't have to run for office to have an opinion: I never even implied such. And you are free to dislike me, to critique me all you wish: no complaint from me. But it would be interesting for the public to know more about YOU. Who are you? Here's your chance to show a little courage.

Instead of debating you on this forum , I will accept your plea of guilt and I will move on from the Patch. If you have read my few posts you will see posts that are generally in response to unprofessional behavior of elected officials or hasty generalizations made by others.
You're right, this should be about the issues and NOT, the people. I wish it were so.

Now it's your turn to re-read my previous post. I said, "IF I was self-contradictory",
meaning that Patch readers as a group, or local residents as a group should determine as to whether I am guilty. You may, of course, file the charge against me; but you cannot be the judge or the jury. Nevertheless, we'll agree "to move on".
