Dog Park in the Making
Volunteers start the process to create a dog park in Attleboro.
It was raining, but the people still came out Sunday to kick off the installation of the dog park on Pond Street North in Attleboro. Volunteers led by Dog Park Committee co-Chairs Roberta Collins, Carol Ferraro and Ray Cord dug 82 holes and put gravel in them. Next week, the holes will be filled with cement and poles will be placed. On the following week, a chain-link fence will be wrapped around the poles to finalize the installation.
The digging process was made faster with the aid of City Councilor Jonathan Weydt, who brought his company J.W. Waterproofing's Bobcat machine. City official Barry LaCasse contributed to the effort. Also in attendance were dog park advocates Councilor Shannon Heagney and former Councilor Roxanne Houghton.
Volunteers were fueled by hot dogs donated by Tex Barry's Coney Island.
Volunteers are needed the next two Sundays at 10 a.m. to continue the installation. If you would like to help, send an email to attleborodogpark@yahoo.com.

Not me. There are mixed reviews coming from veterinarians regarding the health and safety of dogs who lounge in dog parks.
Besides, what about cats?:)

I've seen wonderful dog parks and this one will be set up well. Let's celebrate that so many people got together to get this done. No one person could have done it alone. It's like a barn raising!! It takes a community!!
PS my cat gets a supervised walk outdoors everyday. Cats are not relational like dogs are, sniffing each others' butt, and chasing around. To each her/his own.

I love Jack Russells!! Always said that if Attleboro got a dog park, I'd get a dog. If I ever do, will consider a Jack!! Love terriers anyway, so stubborn, so much spunk!!!

This was such a good day for the Dog Park Committee and the volunteers. We were able to get all of the holes dug, eat hot dogs, dodge rain drops and watch as our dream began to unfold. Our sincere thanks to each and every person who came today or made a donation to this cause. Because of the power of people volunteering, coming to our fund raisers, making a monetary contribution, this is being accomplished without any taxpayer money. We are proud of the fact that we have done this on our own and will forever hold our heads up. So many have believed in and given to help with a dog park for Attleboro that we could not have done this without your support. So many thanks and we hope to see many more for Phase Two. Stay tuned.

This is truly history in the making!!!! This goes to show what I always say..."never underestimate what a small - determined - group of people can accomplish"! Roberta Collins first approached our city government about this, with only her dog "Spencer" and a dream. Roberta and her crowd worked hard for many years through the "proper channels" and her dream has now come true! This is how it is supposed to work. I am so proud of Roberta, Carol and Ray for what they have accomplished - this is a really big deal. Great job!
Thank you to City Coucilor Jonathan Weydt for doing the right thing and helping this crowd today - they earned the help.

I have been with these people nearly 2 years now & I have never met so many kind, determined people in my life. Especially on days like today, with people like Counciler Weydt & all the other extra sopping wet volunteers. It really warms my heart to see the capacity of the human spirit.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your accomplishment and improving the quality of life for our best friends.
