Bay View Asks Girls to Be WISE

The girls' school in East Providence is hosting its second annual conference to introduce STEM (science, technolgoy, engineering, medicine and math) to more girls.

Bay View Academcy describes it as a “girl thing.”

It is the second annual Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) conference that runs Saturday, Nov. 17, at the school on Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence.

Approximately 200 fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls from around Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts will spend half a day – 8 am to 12:30 pm -- participating in hands-on workshops related to the fields of science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (STEM).

Workshops will be taught by accomplished Bay View Academy alumnae and faculty, said Lia McAlpine, alumnae director at the school.

WISE is open to girls from any school free of charge. Its aim is to encourage girls everywhere to pursue studies and careers in STEM fields.

Pre-registration is required. Call 401-434-0113, ext. 104.
