Attleboro Kids Read to Feed Families in Need

The Attleboro Public Library has partnered with Heifer International on a reading incentive program.

It has been two full weeks since Attleboro students ended their school year, but not all students have put away their books.

In fact, many students are participating in the Attleboro Public Library's Summer Reading Program, which will help them help families in need.

"This summer the Attleboro Public Library has partnered with Heifer International to show kids how easy it is to help families in need," said Attleboro Children's Librarian Krystal Brown.

The organization has created a "Read to Feed" program for libraries. The progam will help Heifer assist millions of families throughout the world to feed their families with livestock.

The plan? The library will purchase an animal for Heifer to give to a family in need.

"As kids read, they will earn a chance to vote on which Heifer animal the library will sponspor," Brown said.

At the end of the summer, Brown said she will tally the votes and announce which animal will be sponsored by the library.

"The goal of this reading incentive program is to show kids that helping others is important and can be done by doing something that they already do read."

The "Read to Feed" progam will work wonderfully with the Massachusetts "One World Many Stories" theme, according to Brown.

"One Word Many Stories," is a reading program at the Attleboro Public Library that began June 20 and will run until August 12. The summer reading program is sponsored by the local library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
