Attleboro Farmers' Market Seeking Vendors for July Opening

An Attleboro farmers' market is slated to open July 2, but it needs more vendors.

City Councilor Richard Conti got the ball rolling to revive the , which consisted of a few vendors selling goods in a downtown parking lot.

In two short months, Conti collaborated with interested residents in the city to come up with a plan that would include various vendors, entertainment and a great location. "There is a tremendous amount of energy into this farmers' market," Conti said during Tuesday's Attleboro Municipal Council Committee meeting. Now, however, Attleboro Farmers' Market is seeking more vendors.

Attleboro resident Heather Porreca worked with other residents to put Conti's plan in place and has been busy adding vendors to her list.

In order to commit a minimum of 20 vendors each week, Porreca did what anyone in this age of social media would do, she took her message to the Web. Porreca created an Attleboro Farmers' Market Facebook page, which has gained more than 300 thumbs up by Facebook friends who chose to "like" the page, 100 followers on Twitter, a micro-blogging network, and a new website.

"What we are most excited about is that we are looking at the AFM as "an agricultural yard sale," Porreca said. "We are encouraging Attleboro residents who have surplus from their gardens, to come to the AFM and sell what they have grown."

Porreca also encourages people in the community who cans, jellies or makes breads and pies to contact the market organizers.

"We have several certified kitchens in our area that can be rented for a donation and you can sell your goods at the AFM," she said.

Organizers said the farmer's market is a "true and pure effort to create a local economy because "every dollar spent at the AFM with an Attleboro vendor, stays here in Attleboro."

Pies, seasonal fruits and vegetables and jellies are not the only products that will be available at the market, there is a full mind, boyd, spirit approach to the market, according to Porreca.

"Every Saturday we will have entertaiment, musicals or a contest," she said. "The (Attleboro) YMCA will be demonstrating some of thier new programs"

There will be yoga in the park and dancing in the grass.

And soon everyone driving through downtown Attleboro will see a reminder of the Attleboro Farmers' Market relaunch, thanks to permission by the Attleboro City Council to hang a banner with the details in downtown Attleboro. The Attleboro Farmers' Market will be available to residents each Saturday beginning July 2 through Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday.

"It's going to be a great season," Porreca said.
